This non-Maigret from 1955 reads almost more like Patricia Highsmith than Simenon - it's set in a small town in Connecticut, where father-of-four and supermarket manager Walter Higgins starts to question the pleasant middle-class respectability of his life when he is blackballed from the Country Club for the second year in succession.

But what is unmistakable Simenon about this book is the narrator's undisguised delight in the detail of working out what makes Walter Walter - his complex job keeping shelves stacked and anticipating what his customers will want, the whole peculiar condition of being a father and a husband, even the administrative business of the planning committee for the new school he sits on - everything is carefully recorded and set out for us to see what an extraordinary thing an ordinary person can be. And, of course, since this is a Simenon novel, we're all sitting there waiting for the first murder - is Walter going to go postal and wipe out the Country Club membership committee? Or...?

(If you put together the English and French titles of this one, it sounds as though it ought to be a novel about snooker! But apparently not - the two sets of publishers simply seem to have picked out separate ideas from the text that only look odd in the unlikely event that you put two copies in different languages side-by-side.) Walter Higgins thinks he knows what life in suburban America is all about. He works for his community, attends church every Sunday, and tries to be a good role model. But his dreams are about to be shattered. His application to join the town's prestigious country club is blackballed for the second time and it seems all the town knows. This precipitates Walter into a mid-life crisis, where he thinks everyone must be laughing at him. And then, when his mother dies, he has to go back to the New York area where he grew up, and the effect is soul-shattering.

This novel is a reminder of the years that Simenon spent living in North America (1945-55). During this time he learnt to speak English with relative ease. see Wikipedia entry.

It is also not a murder mystery, no Maigret, but a chance for Simenon to show his understanding of what makes ordinary people tick, whatever their nationality. It is also reminded me that I should make more effort to read more Simenon novels. Several have been re-printed as e-books this year and last by Penguin. ( )

L'existence de Walter Higgins ne se distingue en rien de celle de ses voisins. Dans son quartier élégant de Maple Street, tout est standardisé : de la maison à la tondeuse à gazon, sans oublier la voiture, le tout acheté à tempérament. Une satisfaction manque cependant au bonheur de Higgins : son admission au Country Club dont les membres, notables de la cité, semblent s'ingénier à lui interdire l'entrée. Cette année encore, une boule noire s'est introduite dans le vote. Cette boule noire devient la hantise de Higgins. Malgré sa position honorable, il s'imagine méprisé de tous, même de sa femme et de sa fille aînée qui pourtant l'aiment et le respectent. A l'occasion d'une réunion de groupe scolaire où il siège comme membre du comité, il s'oppose à un projet défendu par le clan auquel il rêve d'appartenir ; au terme de ce qu'il prend pour une révolte, il donne sa démission de trésorier. Son attitude lui vaut l'admiration de sa fille, mais provoque l'inquiétude de son épouse : a-t-il pensé à sa famille ? N'a-t-il pas risqué sa situation ? La ville semble oublier son esclandre, mais d'autres ennuis surviennent quand même : sa mère, Louisa, kleptomane et soûlarde, s'est enfuie de l'institut où son fils l'avait placée. Higgins part aussitôt pour la rechercher et apprend qu'elle a été fauchée par un bus à Oldbridge, la ville où il est né. En décidant de mourir en face de la cité ouvrière où il a passé son enfance, n'a-t-elle pas voulu lui jouer un dernier tour malveillant ? Bien que choqué par ce drame vécu dans le souvenir de son enfance minable, Higgins se rend compte qu'il a franchi une nouvelle étape et constate que ses concitoyens ne sont pas restés indifférents à son épreuve. Désormais, il conformera sa vie d'homme à ce que la société attend de lui. Peut-être ainsi méritera-t-il qu'un jour on le sollicite d'entrer au Country Club...
