Several times while reading this book, I had to stop and remind myself that I was on dry land, and that the monsters couldn't get me. Curran's writing is intense, well-spoken, and scary as all hell. I felt at times that the descriptions were long-winded and superfluous, but honestly, considering the world he was trying to paint it can be forgiven!

No, I loved this wild ride of a book. I look forward to more of his works! ( )

ya, you've got my attention. I'd like to see 'Master and Commander: Dead Sea' as a movie, in case anyone important out there is reading this ( )

Looking at the story as a whole, it was an okay read. Predictable, yet satisfying.

The writing is very low, read like a middle grade book, definitely has that first book air to it. This took me out of the story many times during the first half of the book. Once I got to the 60% mark it picked up in action and plot.

I really hate the trope of "lack of communication" so that was seriously infuriating through out the book. Zedd's short comings as a wizard also drove me crazy, but I guess that was to sell the "everyone has faults" theme. While Richard was a whine, and came off as around 16 years old, he did have a nice growth arc by the end. Though when too many of the cast have the exact same self-deprecation arc it is rather lack luster in delivery.

The ending wrapped everything up nicely, tied up all of the threads that were opened, with a string pulling me to want to go forward onto the next book. Not sure if I will continue on but had to see what the fuss was about with this author.

There are a lot of commonalities between this book and those that clearly inspired him, and it is very much a product of it's time in terms of social commentary. ( )

4.5* rounded up to 5.

This was another hit from Tim Curran!

A ship and her crew encounters a dense, endless fog. From there it's all downhill for them.

There is no way for me to impart to you the descriptive skills of Mr. Curran. They are simply outstanding. He made me see creatures that I could never have dreamed up in a million years. After reading this book for a while, it took me a moment to adjust myself to real life when I looked up. He made me feel as I were in the fog myself.

The atmosphere and tension in this story are both excellent. It has been a long time since I've soaked in a truly creepy read like this. I wholeheartedly enjoyed it!

The only thing that bothered me (resulting in the subtraction of half a star), was a few repetitious chapters around the 25% mark. I felt like the point had been made about where each character was and what they were facing and I wanted to get on with the story.

Other than that this book was pretty awesome. Imaginative, descriptive, atmospheric, creepy and crawly. This story had it all. Highly recommended!

*A note regarding the Kindle edition of this book. On Goodreads the description says it has 300 some odd pages, but the Kindle version was over 500 pages. It's a relatively long book.* ( )
