Commissioned by the BBC, and described by Dylan Thomas as 'a play for voices', UNDER MILK WOOD takes the form of an emotive and hilarious account of a spring day in the fictional Welsh seaside village of Llareggub. We learn of the inhabitants' dreams and desires, their loves and regrets. The play introduces us to characters such as Captain Cat who dreams of his drowned former seafellows and Nogood Boyo who dreams of nothing at all. It is a unique and touching depiction of a village that has 'fallen head over bells in love'. The First Voice narration reveals the ordinary world of daily happenings and events, while the Second Voice conveys the intimate, innermost thoughts of the fascinating folk of Llareggub. I followed along in the book as I listened to a performance I found on YouTube - you do really need the Welsh accent. I enjoyed the language and also the character of Mr. Pugh, who dreams of poisoning his wife and wears a moustache like Dr. Crippen. ( )
Now that I've decided to try to 'review' each book that I have cataloged, there will be books( like this one) where I may recall reading it some years ago, may or may not remember how or why I liked it, but still can recall only a few or maybe no details about the experience. ( )
This is a beautifully produced copy of Thomas' almost childishly lascivious and mellifluous radio play with notes of Thornton Wilder. I only wish that I had Dylan Thomas and Richard Burton to read it to me. ( )
A radio-play thats part beatnik poem. It describes a day in the life of a small village starting with their dreams as they sleep and following them until they sleep again. The beatnik style can take a little getting used to, and i have a dislike of the surreal so the opening dream-sequences were a little jarring. Overall though its pretty funny and a bit moving in places. ( )

Under Milk Wood is unique. It is certainly the most famous and probably the most generally enjoyable of all works specifically written for radio.

FIRST VOICE (Very softly) To begin at the beginning: It is spring, moonless night in the small town, starless and bible-black, the cobble streets silent and the hunched, courters' – and- rabbits' wood limping invisible down to the sloeback, slow, black, crowblack, fishingboat-bobbing sea. The houses are blind as moles (though moles see fine tonight in the snouting, velvet dingles) or as blind as Captain Cat there in the muffled middle by the pump and the town clock, the shops in mourning, the Welfare Hall in widows' weeds. And all the people of the lulled and dumbfounded town are sleeping now.
