It seems that writers of well-received adult stories, of almost any genre, are not well-received by critics whenever they tender forays into kid fiction. I doubt that many readers of adult fiction,or kid fiction for that matter, remember stories for young people written by Howard Spring, James Clavell, Anna Quindlen or Mickey Spillane. They may not even chose to open them if they found them on a shelf somewhere. I think that's a pity because many times they are good stories. I liked this one and the other one Mr. Spillane wrote called "The Ship That Never Was". They are light, mysterious and a little bit of fantasy. They read easily and will give a young person something to think about when they have finished them. ( )
