After her big brother Curtis is gunned down in the streets of Brooklyn, Angel's family crumbles. Grief stricken, her mother turns to heroin to ease her pain. She doesn't notice that her son has no food or that her daughters' clothes are torn and dirty. Worst of all, she doesn't see what her boyfriend does to Angel behind closed doors. Desperate to support her younger brother and sister, Angel hits the streets looking for anything or anyone to help. But she's fifteen years old, so options for legal work are few. As a last resort, she turns to her brother's best friend, Antoine, who arranges for a job for her at a strip club. It's only supposed to be for a while, until she can get her working papers. Angel is convinced she won't fall victim to the streets like her mother. But the fast life has its temptations and a magical ability to make you forget.… (mais)

I thought this book was Great! The story revolves around 15 year Angel who encounters one disaster after another. When her breadwinner brother, Curtis, is killed and her mother develops a drug habit, Angel feels responsible for saving her younger sister, Naja, and brother, Kindle. When Angel discovers she can't legally get a job until she turns 16, she turns to a friend of her late brother who hooks Angel up with a strip club.

Meanwhile, as Angel continues to work at the strip club and hides this fact from her boyfriend, Jamal, she is being molested by her mom's live-in boyfriend. Just as there appears to be some light at the end of the tunnel as Angel manages to save $600 and looks forward to taking her siblings and moving into their own place (not sure how she planned to manage that when she was not old enough to work), her mom steals her money and she and her boyfriend go on a drug binge.

This book does not have a fairytale ending so if you want and/or need that, then this is definitely not the book for you. Personally, I admire authors that are not afraid to step outside of the Hollywood norm and put a more realistic spin on a book's ending. So I found this book very enjoyable.

I do feel there were a few loose ends. For example, whatever happened with Jamal and his mom, how did Angel's mom deal with Marvin once Angel revealed he had molested/raped her, whatever happened with her baby? I agree with some of the previous reviewers: the book should have been a little longer in order to wrap up the loose ends or perhaps there should have been a part 2.

But overall I found the book to be a page turner and I was eager to find out what would happen next to Angel. I would highly recommend this book and I look forward to reading other novels by Miasha! ( )
