Whatever you do, don't get in Maxine's way. This tough-talking inhabitant of Crabby Road will mow you down! Ah, Maxine, that crabby old lady with the perplexed-looking dog who has one eye larger than the other and the rarely-seen cat who lives on Shoebox greeting cards (and merchandise). .These reprints aren't in color, but they're about 240 of them (two cartoons per page).
Notes:
'Crabby Road' is a pun on the title of a Beatles record album, 'Abbey Road'.
p. 12: 'The best part of waking up' is part of the Folgers's coffee slogan.
p.15 'tennies' is short for 'tennis shoes,' better known as 'sneakers' if you're American and 'Plimsolls' if you're British.
p.39 I think this one has to do with an ad for Calvin Klein's Obsession perfume.
p. 65 Maxine is quoting a line from Robert Frost's poem 'Mending Wall'.
p. 68 In the American Civil War, the Union army had blue uniforms and the Rebel army had gray.
p. 82 Now I know that Mr. Bubble bubble bath is still available.
A list of the persons who write Maxine's dialog is on p. 128.
If you're not familiar with Maxine, she's full of malice for all and charity toward none -- but she's funny about it. Seekers of sweet little old ladies should steer clear. For the rest of us, Maxine says the kind of things we might think, but (assuming our parents did their job and taught us manners), won't say. ( )
