Welcome to the brutal and elite world of Basgiath War College, where everyone has an agenda, and every night could be your last . . . Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to enter the Scribe Quadrant, living a quiet life among books and history. Now, the commanding general - also known as her tough-as-talons mother - has ordered Violet to join the hundreds of candidates striving to become the elite of Navarre: dragon riders. But when you're smaller than everyone else and your body is brittle, death is only a heartbeat away . . . because dragons don't bond to 'fragile' humans. They incinerate them. With fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, most would kill Violet to better their own chances of success. The rest would kill her just for being her mother's daughter - like Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the Riders Quadrant. She'll need every edge her wits can give her just to see the next sunrise. Yet, with every day that passes, the war outside grows more deadly, the kingdom's protective wards are failing, and the death toll continues to rise. Even worse, Violet begins to suspect leadership is hiding a terrible secret. Alliances will be forged. Lives will be lost. Traitors will become allies . . . or even lovers. But sleep with one eye open because once you enter, there are only two ways out: graduate or die.… (mais)

    Caramellunacy: Divergent has a similar dangerous/reckless emphasis on courage and fighting (and thinking outside the box) as Fourth Wing and a similar frowned-upon love story with a damaged young man in leadership and a new recruit.

    humouress: Young adults, a generation after a rebellion, in a military college learning to ride dragons and preparing to fight a war against other countries with flying mounts of war. This book has gotten a ton of hype from adults which is kind of surprising. It was a 3 star book but the last 80 or so pages bumped it to 3 1/2 stars.
That being said, the book is well written but after reading it, it was essentially Harry Potter for teenage girls.
I admit I don’t read fantasy books. This one takes place somewhere with a bunch of made up names and they have a dragon flying school. But the characters behave like cliches from a 1980’s movie at a high school, think Pretty in Pink or Some Kind of Wonderful. There is enough use of the word Fuck to get it an R rating, the main character is in desperate need of sex which eventually happens. The required 21st century politically correct checks are in place. Gay character, bi character, special needs character. Oh and the author has a serious leather fetish, there is nothing wrong with this but like much of the book it doesn’t go anywhere.
And therein lies the problem for me this is a teen girl high school book with flying dragons.
The book ends with a big reveal, apparently so does the new sequel, and there is no date for the 3rd book. Like the Harry Potter series where I read the first book 25 years ago, one in the series will be enough for me ( )

Lost a little steam after the giddy rush of chapters 13, 14, and 15 when we met the dragons, but overall this was fun! Yarros wrote a straightforward, kickass MC with a degenerative tissue disorder and cool hair. I wasn't a huge Xaden fan? But we have several books to reconcile lol. The dragons were fabulous, loved Tairn. I’m excited for Iron Flame!

* In veel opzichten een beter(e) boek/serie.

I think there is very little that I can say about this book that other similar ratings/reviews haven't already said, but holy SHIT??
If I had to blurb this book I would say that “Fourth Wing” is little more than an overhyped copycat of a story: Yarros has seemingly plucked choice bits from every other popular book from the past decade and has sloppily stitched those bits together with stilted, anachronistic dialogue and plot points that limp along the most predictable and uninspired paths of narrative she could have possibly picked.

For the life of me, I could not pinpoint one single original thought in this book. It felt exactly like someone had taken pages from the Divergent trilogy, the Inheritance Cycle, The Hunger Games, A Court of Thorns and Roses, and An Ember in the Ashes and then mushed them all together like a toddler playing with mashed potatoes.

It’s also deeply TIRED. The tropes are trope-ing; Yarros even manages to work in the ol’ “you’re not like other girls “ but makes it “ you’re not like other riders”. And if I had to sit through one more description of how teeny tiny ( )

Finishes with a cliff hanger. A lot of excitement and lust. A young woman trains to be a dragon rider and fighter on the life threatening environment of a war college. She falls in love with the man she has been told to fear and distrust. All isn’t what out seems. An exciting tale. ( )
