Forgettable. Read this after Patchett's Dutch House and expected a similar vibe. There were some interesting elements but the characters and storyline blended into so many other books that I've read. Too many loose ends at the end of the book. ( )

I love Patchett's State of Wonder -- it is a true masterwork and her magnum opus. I also really like her more famous and highly acclaimed Bel Canto. So I was excited to read this. Sadly it doesn't live up to its promise. This is the story of a father and his sons as the latter navigate nascent adulthood. They interact with each other in changing ways over the course of a stressful day in which they also encounter their biological mother who relinquished them for adoption. There's a lot of emotional depth to plumb here, but it isn't too satisfying. The whole start of the novel is also about a statue (sigh) and the payoff isn't there. It's too bad. Makes me want to reread my favorite, State of Wonder, instead... ( )

This is my first Ann Patchett book. I really enjoyed it and found it a quick read. The story takes place over a 24 hour period, and a lot is packed into that time. Doyle is a former mayor of Boston and passionate about politics. Years ago, when their son Sullivan was a child, Doyle and his wife adopt two black boys. Raising them fell completely on Doyle when his wife passed away. He did a great job, although one can see that less of his attention was given to his first son, and they grew up to be fine young men who loved him dearly. Out of a sense of duty, they allow him to drag them to political speeches and discussions, that it is getting old for them comes to a head, when leaving one, Tip, is almost struck by a car. What saves him is a woman, coming out of no where, pushing him out of the way. After she is taken to the hospital, they realize her daughter has no one. The daughter, they soon find out, knows quite a bit about them and she reveals that her mother is the boys mother also. How do they handle this, how do they feel, how do they feel about having a sister, what would their lives have been like, what will it be like now...so many emotions. I really liked this book. ( )

This an example of a family hurting and an accident helps bring them to an understanding of each other a bit more. I felt sorry for Kenya always having to watch her siblings from a distance. Truly showed how we only notice what we want to see. The father was right in exposing his children to being members of the community and caring about them but at some point he needed to let them be themselves. Tip is trying so hard by the end to try his father's way. ( )

This novel was written over a decade ago (I checked), and yet it feels oddly present in its exploration of themes like family, politics, race, and poverty. It makes for hard reading at times - the novel opens with the death of a mother and a father grappling with his grief and raising their three sons - and yet is also innately hopeful. Ann Patchett has a way of creating characters which both represent larger ideas and yet are also believable as individuals. This book made for great reading and contains a story I won't soon forget. Beg all you want, Doyle never read more than a chapter a night.
Bernadette's luck had been her life, her love for her husband and her son's, the joy in her home. Her existence did not add up to a handful of tests meant to win her place in heaven.
That was not to say they were all thinking noble thought of medical science. Most of them, he knew them well enough to say, were probably thinking of dinner about now, about cleaning out their apartments and getting the hell out of Baltimore.
