After carving up the once lovingly cared-for downtowns of Small Town America, Wal-Mart launched a frontal assault on mom-and-pop businesses all over the globe. With 1.5 million employees operating more than 3,500 stores, Wal-Mart is now the world's largest private employer. In this third edition of How Wal-Mart Is Destroying America (and the World), intrepid Texas newspaperman Bill Quinn continues the fight. Featuring detailed accounts of Wal-Mart's questionable business practices and the latest information on Wal-Mart lawsuits, vendor issues, and efforts to stop expansion, Quinn shows why Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., is arguably the most feared and despised corporation in the world. Whether you're a customer fed up with Wal-Mart's false claims, a vendor squeezed by strong-arm tactics, a worker pushed to increase the Waltons' bottom line, or a concerned citizen trying to save your hometown, this book will show you how to get Wal-Mart off your back and out of your backyard. BILL QUINN is a World War II veteran, retired newspaperman, and certified anti-Wal-Mart crusader. He lives with his wife, Lennie, in Grand Saline,Texas.… (mais)
Read from a neutral standpoint, this book will come across poorly written and poorly referenced. The book projects a very gossipy vibe and seems nothing more than a retelling of third-party horror stories and negative-spin media articles. Additionally, the level of respect and authority is notched down every time Bill Quinn uses juvenile words and phrases like "blankety-blank", tell them "where to go", and "Hell."
While unsavory practices may be happening within Wal-Mart, it is hard to determine the level or validity of "destruction" from this book, as little concrete evidence is present. Quinn seems to hold everything but the consumer responsible for Wal-Mart becoming the giant it is today. With this in mind, "What You Can Do About It" is not shop, supply, or support it.
If you're looking for some good gossipy horror stories, this book will be right up your alley. If you're looking for numbers and facts, this might not be the book with which to start. ( )

Preface -- Every journalist -- even the eighty-eight year-old who pens these lines -- dreams of writing something that will make a difference in the fight against the evil dragons of the world. -- One truly evil dragon is the giant discounter who has already crushed virtually all the mom-and-pop stores in America's small towns and has made huge dents in good-citizen stores like J.C. Penney and Sears in larger towns. -- Maybe, just maybe, some readers of this new edition will step out of the shadows with a voice loud enough to curb the growth of the worst enemy American retailers and manufacturers of consumer products -- and their consumers -- have had in our country's history.

All I ask is that if you do decide in favor of Wal-Mart -- whether you're shopping for a barbecue grill there or permitting the mega-retailer to build in your town -- just know what you are choosing, and know what you are choosing to give up and what you may be allowing to be destroyed.
