Something told me to buy an Agatha Christie novel though since I'd never read one. I looked up the top books and chose this one off the list. I was not disappointed. I obviously don't want to give anything away, but it was such a fun ride to go on and I quite like Poirot. I'm familiar with the character, but haven't read any of the novels until now. It won't be my last. I certainly didn't see this coming. What a twist although in hindsight, Agatha Christie provided enough clues for you to be as masterful a detective as Poirot. The only thing that slightly mars the ending is that while the motive for the murder is clear, the motive for the blackmail is less so. Why would the murderer blackmail Mrs Ferrars?
I read a Miss Marple book, "The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side" a couple of months later and loved it. I wrote,
I think the characters in this book were much better developed. I loved her insights into the movie star mentality. Also, I loved how she connected the story to the Tennyson poem...
"The web flew out and opened wide...
The mirror crack'd from side to side.
'The curse has come upon me',
cried the Lady of Shalott."
I am now enjoying most of Christie's novels that I pick up. This is truly a masterpiece of the genre. She truly brings the reader to the village of King's Abbey, where "hobbies and recreations can be summed up in the one word, 'gossip'".
Hercule Poirot, here also known as "the Man who grew vegetable marrows" is in his finest form.
The twist at the end is spectacular! I can't say anymore! Read it! ( )
