"Instead of presents this Christmas, a true crime podcaster is opening up a cold case... Madeline Martin has built a life for herself as the young owner of a thriving business, The Next Chapter Bookshop, despite her tragic childhood and now needing to care for her infirm father. When Harley Granger, a failed novelist turned true crime podcaster, drifts into her shop in the days before Christmas, he seems intent on digging up events that Madeline would much rather forget. She's the only surviving victim of Evan Handy, the man who was convicted of murdering her best friend Steph, and is suspected in the disappearance of two sisters, also good friends of Madeline's, who have been missing for nearly a decade. It's an investigation that has obsessed her father Sheriff James Martin right up until his stroke took his faculties. Harley Granger has a gift for seeing things that others miss. He wasn't much of a novelist, but his work as a true crime author and podcaster has earned him fame and wealth--and some serious criticism for his various unethical practices. Still, visiting Little Valley to be closer to his dying father has caused him to look into a case that many people think is closed--and some want reopened. And he has a lot of questions about the night Stephanie Cramer was killed, Ainsley and Sam Wallace disappeared, and Madeline Martin was left for dead, bleeding out on a riverbank. Since Evan Handy went to jail, three other young women have gone missing, most recently a young college dropout named Lolly. Five young women missing in the same area in a decade. Are they connected? Was Evan Handy innocent after all? Or was there some else there that night? Someone who is still satisfying his dark appetites? As Christmas approaches and a blizzard bears down, Madeline and her childhood friend Badger return to a past they both hoped was dead--to find the missing Lolly and to answer questions that have haunted them both, discovering that the truth is more terrible and much closer to home than they think. Coupling a picturesque, cozy setting with a deeply unsettling suspenseful plot, Christmas Presents is a chilling seasonal novella that can be enjoyed all year long"--… (mais)

When true crime writer and podcaster Harley Granger arrives in the small town of Little Valley, New York, just days before Christmas, bookstore owner Madeline Martin is compelled to revisit a traumatic event from her past. It has been over a decade since Madeline survived a vicious attack that left her seriously injured. On the same night, her close friend Stephanie was murdered and two other girls, also friends of Madeline and Stephanie, disappeared. Madeline’s then-boyfriend Evan Handy was convicted of the crime and was sentenced to life in prison. Madeline survived, though her memories of the events of that night remain cloudy. She has made life for herself in her hometown, keeps busy with the bookstore and takes care of her ailing father who was once the Sheriff of the town, but is wary of romantic relationships. Evan Handy maintains that he is innocent, and Harley Granger is in town to find out as much as can about the old case as well as the most recent disappearance of a young woman – one of three women who have disappeared after Evan was convicted.

Does this mean Evan was innocent? If so, who was responsible for the events from all those years ago? Are the most recent disappearances connected to the old case?

Told from multiple perspectives, Christmas Presents by Lisa Unger is an engaging read. The author seamlessly weaves past and present events into a gripping narrative that had me engaged from the very first page. The author depicts Madeline’s trauma and how it casts a shadow in her present life with much sensitivity. The ending did feel a tad rushed and was not entirely unpredictable, but I enjoyed this novella and thought that the plot was well structured, consistently paced and overall, well executed.

This was my first time reading Lisa Unger and look forward to exploring more of the author’s work.

Many thanks to Penzler Publishers and NetGalley for the digital review copy of this novella. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. Christmas Presents was published on October 24, 2023. ( )

I love the time of the year when seasonal titles start popping up. And especially when it's a favorite author. Christmas Presents is Lisa Unger's gift to readers this season!

Madeline was the only survivor of a serial killer that terrorized her town years ago. A man was convicted. But, now an author turned podcaster wants to reopen the case. He stops into Madeline's bookstore asking for her participation, as other women have gone missing.

As always, I was immediately caught up in Unger's premise. A past and present timeline is used, which I always enjoy as well. We're with a teenage Madeline as she gets close to what the reader knows is danger - in many ways. And with her in the presents as she tries to remember what she has forgotten. She's a likeable character that's easy to get behind. Unger does a great job presenting the two ages of Madeline.

There's a good cast of supporting players that gives the reader a wide variety of choice for 'whodunit.' Some red herrings kept me guessing until the final pages.

The bookshop is a wonderfully drawn setting - and I'd been quite happy to browse the shelves and displays! This book might be a great gift for yourself!

And what makes this a Christmas novella? Well, the timeframe is the days building up to Christmas. An unknown person has left Madeline a gift on her porch every Christmas for many years. And what about the person dressing up as Santa ahead of time?

While marketed as a seasonal read, those who enjoy murder mysteries will enjoy this book anytime. ( )

I love how short this book was. Lisa Unger gets right into the story right away and we are taken on a twisty, wintery ride. Managed to read this book before the first snow fell, now it is time to read more winter themed books because I am not going outside for 5 months. :)

Jennifer Pickens did a great job narrating this novel and I will definitely look for more of Jennifer's books in the future. ( )

Maddie survived a horrific assault as a teen which took the life of her best friend and, during which, two other friends disappeared. The perpetrator is in prison and she has worked hard to move on despite her scars, both physical and emotional. But, when a true crime podcaster moves to town with the intent to reopen the case, his presence seems to stir things up again especially as he ties that earlier tragedy to two other murders and the recent disappearance of a stripper. Maddie knows that the right man was convicted of the original crime but is it possible he wasn’t alone that night?

Christmas plays very little role in Christmas Presents by Lisa Unger except as a timeframe for the story. Nor is this your typical Christmas cozy but rather a well-paced thriller that kept me engaged throughout. The story is told through two different timelines, the events leading up to the original crime and the present and two different voices, Maddie and Lolly, the stripper who has disappeared but it was fairly easy to keep their different voices separate. My only quibble with the story was how easy it was to spot the perpetrators but this didn’t interfere too much with my enjoyment since the real mystery is what happened to Maggie and her friends in the past and where Lolly is in the present. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Jennifer Pickens who does an excellent job.

I received an early audiobook from Netgalley and HighBridge Audio in exchange for an honest review ( )

I didn’t find this story to be very much about Christmas, but it moved at a fast pace and kept me engaged throughout.

Maddie, our main character is a survivor of a terrible crime. She’s grown now, owns a bookstore and has tried to put the past behind her. As the holiday season draws near, a podcaster with a shows up in order to do an investigation for his show and possibly get the case reopened.

Things heat up quite quickly and it’s a fairly easy task to figure out who the culprits are, but I enjoyed the story in spite of it. Also, there were a few aspects that I questioned near the end, but I guess I can overlook them and hope she writes a sequel to wrap up the loose ends.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Penzler Publisher, Mysterious Press for allowing me to rad an advance copy. I’m happy to offer my honest review and recommend this to other readers who enjoy mystery/thrillers. ( )
