Crosley's memoir about the death of her friend and burglary of her home is honest, bitter, angry, and heartbreaking. I loved that she didn't shy away from the hard parts of grief. She didn't wrap it up in a tidy bow and give a life lesson at the end. There are layers of pain when it comes to missing someone, being angry they are gone, and feeling guilty for your life continuing. Grief is not simple. This is a painful book, full of her scorn for those around her, but it's a truthful one.

[3.75] In an interview on “The Daily Show,” Crosby described her book as a “suspenseful story about grief, and it’s also a funny story about grief — and I don’t think you get a lot of those.” She’s correct. Her candid and raw reflections on the suicide of a dear friend are engaging and oftentimes even entertaining. There’s no doubt this work will help many readers to more effectively navigate their own losses. Crosby refers to a number of self-help books, acknowledging that there is “no shortage of books on grief and bereavement." She aptly notes that many start to "sound alike." To the author’s credit, this book stands out as she creatively explores the stages of grief by tapping into her daily experiences, doubts and insights. True, giving readers a bird’s eye view of her mental mindset doesn’t always provide the most cohesive and linear narrative, but it does speak to book’s credibility and authenticity. ( )

Just beautifully written, even sometimes funny, despite the grim subjects. I'll have to read more from her. ( )

Sloane Crosley is one of my favorite writers. She is an essayist in the Nora Ephron, David Sedaris tradition. I have read everything she has had published which includes 2 books of fiction. I enjoy her non fiction more. This book is a tough one because it deals with the suicide of her best friend and former boss Russell. He was 52 when he died by hanging himself. Sloane had no inkling of anything that would have led to his suicide. Crosley uses the loss of jewelry that occurred the month before Russell's death to create a tie in between the loss of possessions and loss of people. She uses her amazing writing ability to create humorous lines that are gems and soften the subject matter but doing so without taking away from the profound loss of her best friend. Reading a book like this helps give you perspective in dealing with something that we all have to face. She does a great job of letting feel how important Russell was to her and all his good and bad. This book is a good introduction to Crosley because you get to see her great writing while getting a lesson on grief. This book mainly about 2 major losses the author experienced within a month had many good qoutes and some good ideas. However, the information presented was so scattered it detracted greatly from the text. The author's style was such that I found it very difficult to connect or empathizer with her. I also prefer not to utilize substances to deal with calamities, and that also may have been the reason. ( )
