"Karin Boye is Sweden's greatest woman poet. Born in 1900, she was a poet of ideas, and wrote a powerful prophetic novel, Kallocain. I was introduced by a Swedish friend to the work of Karin Boye, who has been described as "Sweden's greatest woman poet," and I will always be grateful to him for the discovery. I have frequently thought that the best of her work seems caught in that limbo between faith and despair, but my perceptions are perhaps influenced by my (limited) knowledge of her struggles with her sexual identity, and her eventual suicide. Two of my favorites:

You Are My Purest Consolation

You are my purest consolation,
you are my firmest protection,
you are the best thing I have,
for nothing hurts like you.

No, nothing hurts like you.
You smart like ice and fire,
you cut like steel my soul -
you are the best thing I have.


Yes, of course it hurts

Yes, of course it hurts when buds are breaking.
Why else would the springtime falter?
Why would all our ardent longing
bind itself in frozen, bitter pallor?
After all, the bud was covered all the winter.
What new thing is it that bursts and wears?
Yes, of course it hurts when buds are breaking,
hurts for that which grows
and that which bars.

Yes, it is hard when drops are falling.
Trembling with fear, and heavy hanging,
cleaving to the twig, and swelling, sliding -
weight draws them down, though they go on clinging.
Hard to be uncertain, afraid and divided,
hard to feel the depths attract and call,
yet sit fast and merely tremble -
hard to want to stay
and want to fall.

Then, when things are worst and nothing helps
the tree's buds break as in rejoicing,
then, when no fear holds back any longer,
down in glitter go the twig's drops plunging,
forget that they were frightened by the new,
forget their fear before the flight unfurled -
feel for a second their greatest safety,
rest in that trust
that creates the world.


There is something in these lines which makes me want to crawl away to some secluded corner, and be very quiet with myself... Powerful, in ways I am not always able to understand. ( )

Jag ser med viss förvåning att jag inte uppskattade Karin Boyes Samlade dikter över hövan förra gången jag läste den: att jag inte kunde förstå vad som avsågs med en stor del av dikterna, och att de vara av annan karaktär än jag väntade mig.

Jag kan alltså nått en högre mognad (ha!) på fyra år, eller så var det bara en bakomliggande vetskap om att det snarare var fråga om gestaltningar av känslolägen, uppblandat med lätt överspända dikter om kamp. Några dikter var fortfarande överdunkla, men det mesta tycktes gå tämligen lätt in.

Det är inte mycket som nått status av allmängods, men det gör kanske inte så mycket – man får istället möta det mesta utan att det färgas av tidigare möten. Det är mest ren lyrik, men när det någon gång slår över i epik blir det nästan än mer njutbart – »Torkel Tyre« verkar nästan börja som något av Fröding, men slutar någon helt annanstans:

Öster om Bjura by
är vild och öde trakt,
där lavraggiga granar
står vresiga på vakt.
Där bodde Torkel Tyre,
För dråp lyst i akt.

Bäst är väl också samlingen den kommer från, Härdarna, när rimmen och rytm satt sig där de ska och budskapet fortfarande är någorlunda klart. Senare blir det aningen mer dunkel. De postuma dikterna är som vanligt en samling av det trevliga och det som borde stannat i byrålådorna.

Det första som slog mig var att det jag förväntade mig inte stämde med vad jag fick. Visst fanns där den natursymbolik som Ja, visst gör det ont när knoppar brister är den mest kända exponenten för, och i högre grad även den ungdomliga äventyrslusta som I rörelse är ett exempel på, men även en hel del religösa och närmast stoiskt färgade dikter. Samtidigt fann jag mycket av i synnerhet det tidiga stoffet vara så dunkelt att jag hade svårt att se någon djupare innebörd, och även om de flesta av de senare dikterna var bättre i detta avseende så fanns det fortfarnade de som jag hade svårt att riktigt se poängen med. Även om det fanns en hel del bra dikter så lämnade de flesta dock mig tämligen oberörd. Det är möjligt att jag helt enkelt varit i fel sinnesstämning för att till fullo kunna njuta av vad hon har att förmedla, men det kommer nog dröja ett bra tag innan jag tar fram boken för en omläsning.
