Heddie wants to be a big girl. She wants to travel down that dirt road to Mr. Birdie's to get the eggs that mama needs for scrambled eggs for breakfast tomorrow morning. She takes that wicker basket and sets out on her journey. Over rocks and through streams, Heddie finally makes it to Mr. Birdie's, where she pays for the dozen yard eggs that he puts in her wicker basket. He even sees how big Heddie has gotten. Now, it's back home they go. Heddie sings a tune and then, oops, she almost drops the eggs. Stupid rock! But they are okay. But, what's that up ahead? Apples! One for mama. One for me. And one fo...fo...fo…..OH NO! Reaching for an apple for daddy tilted the wicker basket and every last egg fell out and cracked. It's a good thing that Daddy has a sharp eye and spots her in the tree. It's an even better thing that mama has a understanding heart. It's a great thing that none of them mind apple pie for breakfast, too. ( )

What a great book over all! I thought this book was a great lesson book and the pictures were some what different from other books I have read that were illustrated by E. B. Lewis. They were inside boxes for most the book. Anyways, this gave a great lesson about growing up and being trusted with small tasks to prove you can do it! It also gave the lesson that you should tell an adult when something has happened. If you're honest then its better. Since it was Hetty's first time doing something mama and papa were not made and they made the best out of a cracked egg situation and used what they DID have... apples! apple pie for breakfast, yummy!! This would be a great story for synthesizing because children have a lot of places where they can make predictions, and build off of them. Hetty 's story is one that can be compared to plenty of scenarios, which allows room for questioning and making text connections.

Just like the author's book "Gus wanders off" this is a very well written children's book. The illustrations are wonderful which should come to no surprise seeing who the illustrator is, E. B. Lewis. I loved the simple story of a young girl trying so hard to make her parents happy by bringing home eggs all by herself. I especially loved that her parents are understanding and do not get mad or punish her when things don't go as planned. This reminds me of the saying when life gives you lemons make lemonade, in this book it would say when life gives you apples make apple pie. ( )
