This Urtext volume contains the seven toccatas of J.S. Bach, BMV 910-916. These works do not constitute a cycle, but were composed independently of one another. They appear here in the order of their tonalities. Taking into consideration the lack of autograph scores and the many variations among early versions of the works, this edition has tried to depend upon the source which presumably is the one closest to the autograph, and the work of a reliable copyist. This has also been followed if it has meant on occasion giving the earliest phase of the work. The variants in the remaining sources are given in the notes.
