This is a great informational picture book for introducing the topic. The book went into what dinosaur bones are and how they look. They start with when the first bones were found and how scientists were baffled by the findings. As the book goes into digging up bones and having them into a museum the over all theme is that with new information we need to change our way of thinking in order to fully understand these creatures. In my opinion, this is a great, informational book. I enjoyed this book because of the language, characters, and illustrations throughout the story. The language of the book was very clear and concise. Scientific language can be difficult to break down and this book does a great job in simplifying difficult words. For example, the author explains the three periods of the Mesozoic era by breaking the language down in simple terms such as, "Mud covered the dinosaur layer upon layer... each layer contains its own fossils. That is how scientists tell time." In addition, the author reassures readers by labeling the dinosaur illustrations so it is easy to identify. The main character, a little boy describing his first time at a museum seeing dinosaur bones, is the narrator of the book. Having the little boy's character explain the history of dinosaurs was brilliant. The author starts the book having the little boy reading a story about dinosaurs and dives in to the history of dinosaurs during the boy's trip to a museum. The author used the boy to ask questions like "How do they know what dinosaurs looked like if they never saw one?" to transition into the history which I thought was awesome. Lastly, the illustrations of this book were really great. Each illustration with a dinosaur had a label of its name which was very important and helpful. The illustrations were very simple but effective. For example, on the first couple of pages where the first display of dinosaur bones sits in the museum, it is easy to tell it is a museum display and is accompanied by the label "Diplodocus". The main idea of this book is the history of dinosaurs and what we have learned about them. The book focuses on this main idea by beginning with the early findings of fossils, and ending with the three periods of the Mesozoic era. ( )

The books "Dinosaur Bones" by Aliki is a non-fiction book that discusses what Dinosaurs were, and how we know so much about them. I enjoyed this book because I felt its language was clear and simple. Non-fiction books, especially thought about science can become confusing easily. But this book kept the ideas and content it discussed simple and clear which made the book much easier to understand and made it much more enjoyable. I also enjoyed how the characters drawn in the illustrations truly looks as though the w fascinating with dinosaurs and all the new information they were learning. That being said I felt as thought the illustrations could have been a lot better. They are constructed using many dull colors and do not look realistic or very interesting for that matter. I feel as though if the illustrations had been better the overall. The big idea in this book is that even though dinosaurs lived millions of years ago scientists used fossils to learn about how they lived.
