Mysticism Christian and Buddhist The greatest living authority on the mystical qualities of Oriental and Christian religions is Daisetz Teitaro Suzuki. In this comparative study, Mr. Suzuki shows how Zen and Shin Buddhism of the East and the Christian mysticism of Meister Eckhart meet on common ground. He demonstrates that the superficial differences between these faiths are less significant than their basic similarities. The last part of the book offers a remarkable selection of writings from Japanese mystics. Mr. Suzuki, born in Japan, has taught in universities of the United States and Europe, as well as in his native land. In the first four essays in this collection, D. T. Suzuki reads Meister Eckhart with the eye of a master, pointing out where his understanding deeply coincides with that of Zen Buddhism. Next, he takes on a subject Christians often find difficult, the question of transmigration or reincarnation. Suzuki then compares the dimensionality of the crucifixion with that of enlightenment. In the later essays, Suzuki moves on to the Pure Land tradition of Buddhism, and in particular to the works of Rennyo (1415-1499) and the poetry of Asahara Saichi (1850-1932), for which he provides a rare translation

PREFACE
This book has no pretension to be a thorough, systematic study of the subject. It is more or less a collection of studies the author has written from time to time in the course of his readings, especially of Meister Eckhart as representative of Christian mysticism. For Eckhart’s thoughts come most closely to those of Zen and Shin.
1 MEISTER ECKHART AND BUDDHISM
In the following pages I attempt to call the reader’s attention to the closeness of Meister Eckhart’s way of thinking to that of Mahayana Buddhism, especially of Zen Buddhism.

We generally think that philosophy is a matter of pure intellect, and, therefore, that the best philosophy comes out of a mind most richly endowed with intellectual acumen and dialectical subtleties. But this is not the case. It is true that those who are poorly equipped with intellectual powers cannot be good philosophers. Intellect, however, is not the whole thing. There must be a deep power of imagination, there must be a strong, inflexible will-power, there must be a keen insight into the nature of man, and finally there must be an actual seeing of the truth as synthesised in the whole being of the man himself.
The function of the intellect consists in leading the mind to a higher field of consciousness by proposing all sorts of questions which are beyond itself. The mystery is solved by living it, by seeing into its working, by actually experiencing the significance of life, or by tasting the value of living.
