Textile Masterpieces of Ancient Peru

The textiles of ancient Peru possess an extraordinary beauty and technical perfection that has seldom been surpassed. Now a rich selection of those unique and enduring works has been reproduced in this volume. 77 magnificent full-color photographs reveal the Indians' unerring sense of design and composition, embodied in textiles with vibrant color and radiating faith and a sense of universal order. Many of these examples reveal a people's close ties with nature. Interlacing twigs, grasses, roots, and vegetable fibers used in making mats and baskets, for example, seem to have inspired the geometrical shapes found in many of the abstract patterns. Other motifs appear to represent man-made structures such as walled areas, irrigation systems and parcels of land. The illustrations are accompanied by Mr. Reid's expert and informative text, which discusses the historic, mythological and aesthetic importance of the textiles, as well as the religious, political, sociological and artistic role of the designs in ancient Peruvian society. Essays on the textiles and their historical background and iconography, followed by color plates.
