Dealing with Dragons por Patricia C. Wrede (Caramellunacy)
Caramellunacy: Both stories have a funny irreverent approach. Dealing with Dragons is a bunch of fairy tales gone tangled as Princess Cimorene refuses to do what's proper. Magyk is full of quirky characters and writing - I love the scene where the stove is frantically trying to light itself!)… (mais)

The Magic Thief por Sarah Prineas (megan003, Caramellunacy)
Caramellunacy: Both are set in a somewhat run-down and dreary fantasy world, but Boy 412 and Conn showed what I thought was a similar fun 'spark' in working their way through their lot. Both of these are charming magical adventures.

Fast paced story about two children, who are taken from their families and then discover their true identities and inner strengths. Written for tweens. ( )

Children's fiction; magic/adventure. This might have been better when read vs. heard on audio, I thought the pacing wasn't fast enough (couldn't they figure out the true identity of Boy 412 already?!!?) but it wasn't a bad story, and there were lots of funny moments. Would recommend to HP fans (if they haven't already read it). ( )

I enjoyed this middle grade fantasy story. The cast of characters were varied and enjoyable (down to the messenger rat). The story had a humor that kept me reading. The ending was a little predictable, but the humor and characters made it enjoyable, nonetheless. I will definitely continue the series. ( )

Good: I enjoyed aspects of the world that Sage created, from the Dragon Boat to the poor, abused Messenger Rats, and I liked most of the characters that inhabited her world. My personal favorite was Boy 412, who was an adorable ragamuffin and I wanted everything nice to happen to him (spoiler!).

Bad: I don't usually notice (or care) when a book wants to be Harry Potter but this book really wants to be Harry Potter (right down to the fact that it's seven books). This led to things like it being way too long for the story that it had. At several points long stretches of time passed and yet nothing happened, or something cool did happen and we didn't see it because Sage just decided to have a character tell us about it later. Also many of the magical elements seemed cutesy to me, although that might have been because every magical term was bizarrely written in bold every time it appeared. Most upsetting to me though was how lame I found the villain because I love villains. DomDaniel (that's his real-deal name, people) was not threatening and the actually scary villain (the Hunter) was dispatched in a way that made him too ridiculous. The tone in general was strange. Sometimes huge and horrifying things would happen and then the author would undercut them with humor in a way that didn't work for me. Early Harry Potter did the same thing at times so again, this book really wanted to be Harry Potter.

Overall: I didn't love this first book but I would recommend it because I feel like the future books will be better. It had a fun reveal that I want to see explored more in the next installment and even though I found it cutesy at times, I think that it's a series that has potential for fans of fun fantasy worlds. And I want to know what Boy 412 is going to do next!

My family listened to this middle grade classic every night before bed for a week. It was exciting and endearing experiencing this anew through my daughter's eyes. She's 10 years old and she love, love, LOVED it!! I can't express that enough. She was begging for us to start book #2 even though it was waaay past her bedtime when we finished this book. Magyk has it all. There's a unique magical world occupied by all sorts of creatures both helpful and malevolent. There's (PG) action galore with wizards, and ghosts, an assassin and royal drama. There's betrayl, twisty turns and (easily sussed out) character reveals.

Overall:
This is great fun for bibliophiles of all ages. I can't reccomend this book highly enough. We're off to book #2, Flyte... well, we will be once we get some much needed ZZZZZs.
