Having inherited the cases of her deceased mentor Paddy Reilly, private investigator Molly Murphy is following philandering husbands, tracking down runaway débutantes and working in a sweatshop to discover who is purloining dress designs. None of these jobs seem very dangerous ... at first. But when a woman's body is fished out of the East River, Molly fears it is the missing society girl everyone is talking about. Then Molly's sometime beau, police captain Daniel Sullivan, reveals that another corpse may be the girl's cheating lover, Mike Kelly. And now, as the threads of passion and greed weave a vivid tapestry of violence, Molly must descend into the underworld of the gangs of New York - only to realise that she may need more than her street smart to get to the truth ... and get out alive.… (mais)

In this installment, Molly has two business opportunities come up at the same time: find a young woman from Dublin who has run away to the new world with the family's groom at the request of her father and go undercover as a piece worker in the garment business to discover who has been stealing their designs. She hopes to be able to solve both cases without help of police Captain Daniel Sullivan who says he loves her but is engaged to someone else. Sid, Gus and Ryan O'Neill make appearances in this book also. ( )

“For the Love of Mike” by Rhys Bowen is a Molly Murphy Mystery. This is the third book in the series and I really wish I had started with the first one. Although this is a stand-alone book, I would like to have read about Molly before. She has taken over her deceased boss’s business as a private investigator, back when women were not generally found doing this type of work, and to the chagrin of her police captain ex-boyfriend. She is asked to go undercover in the garment industry to find someone who is stealing the fashions before they can be produced by the designed and who is putting them on the market under their own name.

I thought that the story line was quite engaging. I especially like the Irish banter and wit that is prevalent among the characters. I could truly imagine life as it was in New York in 1901. The immigrants, who are seeking a better life, find themselves housed in tenements and eking out a living for little or no money. Most have left relatives behind in the Old Country and are trying to make enough to send for them. I really liked reading about this time period.

I was sent a print copy of this book by Night Owl Reviews in return for my honest review. You can find this review on my blog at http://wp.me/p2pjIt-he. It took me awhile to complete this mystery, not because it was horrible, but because life got too busy with the holidays.

In this novel, Molly is trying to find Katherine Kelley with the hopes of connecting her with her parents. As Molly digs deeper into the mystery, she puts her own life and others at risk.

With Daniel betrothed to another, Molly finds companionship when she least expects it with Jacob Singer. Is it possible that Molly can move on? When Jacob and Molly discover their friend, Nell murdered in the alley, it become apparent that someone doesn't want them digging around.

Is Katherine dead? Who murdered Nell? What had she found out? ( )

Set in the early 1900's, New York City, Molly is hired to find a young English woman who has run away from her Irish home with the stable boy and ferret out a spy in one of the garment factories.

In the midst of this Molly becomes involved with the beginning of the Garment Workers Union (only to find out that the young woman went missing & is believed to have been found in the river), helps rescue a garment factory's workforce from a fire, moves her adopted family out from their seedy tenement, goes up against an Irish Gang, and begins a friendship with a young Jewish man. Molly Murphy is now on her own as a detective since her mentor died. She does not want to keep working divorce cases which were her mentor's "bread and butter." She takes on a missing persons case when a man from Ireland hires her to find his daughter who had run off with a boyfriend he did not like. She is also hired by a garment factory owner to find who is stealing his designs and passing them along to a competitor. Molly finds herself in many dangerous situations from which she is sometimes rescued by Capt. Daniel Sullivan of the New York police department and sometimes by Jacob, a photographer she meets in the story. I haven't read the earlier books in the series, but I enjoyed this one fairly well. While others in the series are not high priorities, I might enjoy reading them if I can obtain them from the library. ( )
