Can be used to supplement CO River study in 3rd grade or Colorado History. Highlights the diverse life of Powell and his influence in Western US. Interesting jumping off place when discussing land preservation, wilderness, national parks, etc.

This richly illustrated children’s book tells the real-life story of John Wesley Powell’s famous journey down the Colorado River in 1869. A map and chronology are included to further illustrate Powell’s travels. An avid nature lover, Powell had a lifelong curiosity about nature and desire to explore the Colorado, so he opted to take the trip despite having lost one arm in the Civil War. In addition to its historical account, Down the Colorado serves as a positive, inspiring depiction of an individual with a physical disability who not only refuses to give up his dream, but makes history. Travel and access to outdoor recreation areas continue to be issues of concern for individuals with physical disabilities, so Powell’s story offers a hopeful message about the possibilities of experiencing nature even in the face of physical challenges. In addition, because Powell’s disability is acquired through an injury and amputation, rather than a congenital condition, the book illustrates that it is possible for an individual to continue living his or her life after a major injury—Powell lives a full life both before and after losing his arm. Because Powell comes from a family of abolitionists, the book also carries a positive, anti-slavery message.
This ALAN and NSSTB winner will be of interest to public and/or school librarians because it provides an illustrated, child-friendly account of historical events, both Powell’s historic trip and the events of the Civil War. The book could also be used to support collections or discussions and activities pertaining to injury or physical disability, naturalism/exploration, abolitionism, American history, science, or even health education. The vivid illustrations would work well in a read-aloud environment, and are likely to engage independent readers as well. ( )

Review: This is a good example of a biography, because it is about John Wesley Powell’s life and his journey down the Colorado River. His dreams and determination became reality. He went on the biggest adventure of his life that led to one of the biggest science expeditions leading to new territory. ( )
