'Waarom het leven sneller gaat als je ouder wordt' (2001)* en 'De metaforenmachine' (1995)** over de geschiedenis van het (eigen) geheugen. Hier beschrijft hij dertien neurologische en psychiatrische aandoeningen vanuit hun eponiemen: ziekten die genoemd zijn naar hun eerste beschrijvers zoals Parkinson, Alzheimer, Asperger, Korsakov, Lombroso en Gilles de la Tourette. Artsen besteedden indertijd veel aandacht aan gevalsbeschrijvingen zoals nu Oliver Sacks doet, maar naar de mening van Draaisma is dat in de marge van de geneeskunde terecht gekomen. Soms is hij anekdotisch, maar in totaal lezen de achtergronden van de naamgevende zenuwartsen en de door hen beschreven ziektes als een roman, terwijl zij wetenschappelijk zeker verantwoord blijven.
