The Palace of Illusions takes us back to a time that is half history, half myth, and wholly magical. It is told by Panchaali, wife of the Pandavas brothers, a fiery female redefining for us a world of warriors, gods, and the ever-manipulating hands of fate. The novel traces the princess Panchaali's life, beginning with her birth in fire and following her spirited balancing act as a woman with five husbands who have been cheated out of their father's kingdom. Panchaali is swept into their quest to reclaim their birthright, remaining at their side through years of exile and a terrible civil war involving all the important kings of India. Meanwhile, we never lose sight of her strategic duels with her mother-in-law, her complicated friendship with the enigmatic Krishna, or her secret attraction to the mysterious man who is her husbands' most dangerous enemy.… (mais)

Loved the book, Panchaali was interesting, intense and real: driven and loyal, but far from flawless. Even better, she sees and discusses her own flaws! I do wish the other characters had more depth though, what little we saw of them was very well done, but there should have been more. ( )

The palace of illusions is a fictional retelling of the epic Mahabharata, told from Draupadi's perspective. The story is a beautiful amalgamation of exceptional writing and use of imagery. Though a fictional account ,the story holds integrity and stays true to the original epic. It was a refreshing point of view, experiencing the story through Panchaali. The storytelling is immaculate and reflects the era perfectly. The evolution of Panchaali is also exceptionally captured throughout the book, and as readers we evolve through the story alongside Draupadi. A great way to start my 2021 reading year. Highly recommend picking up this book, especially if you love historical fiction. ( )

A marvelous tale, that takes us deep into the Indian epic, 'The Mahabharata,' as told from the perspective of Princess Panchaali. The princess is married to 5 husbands, while secretly in love with someone else, and plays an unsought for but vital role in a war that changes the face of ancient India. By adding the feminine point of view, the author brings new life to a very old story. Chitra Divakaruni weaves a spell of mythology, history and illuminates the universal themes of duty vs. desire, war vs. peace in her own unique and beautifully written way. ( )

Wonderful retelling of Mahabharata that unfortunately pulls its punches in key scenes and falls short of delivering the explosive payoff that it so expertly builds up to.

Half the trouble is that this book seems to want to be a reinterpretation in many ways but it stays frustratingly faithful to the original in all but one subplot that has no impact on either characters or story. It stays true to the original as a faithful retelling even to the extent of remaining conservative in its morals despite starting off wanting to be feminist.

But there was much to love about this book, most especially the relationship depicted between Krishna and Draupadi. Reading this also made me realize how different Draupadi is from the other Pandava wives in all her choices throughout the story. There is a real heroine there, and the book did a great job highlighting this in such a sly, playful way, as glimpsed through the curtains of her all-too-human flaws and obsessions. ( )
