The book Drumbeat in Our Feet is a book about a journey into the deep rooted traditions and artistry of the African dance. This book is for readers of all ages as it will delight any reader with the drum-beating, hand-clapping, foot-stomping celebrations that involve culture and tradition. Readers will discover unique rituals, colorful costumes, and rhythmic instruments. Young readers will see generations through and through. l highly recommend this book to any history class throughout the middle grades classroom. ( )

This book explores the history and styles of African dance. The reader learns about different forms of dance that are passed down from generation to generation, costumes, and body paint. On each page to the left, there is a small paragraph or two describing each topic. The illustrations in this book are great. The illustrator knew just how to make the dancers on each page pop.

I really enjoyed this book and learning about African dance, because to be honest I knew very little before. I would share this book in my classroom to teach about other cultures and all the diversity there is in the world. ( )

Drumbeat in Our Feet by Patricia A. Keeler is a story about African Dance. Each page has a different meaning of African dance. The illustrations are realistic and it really helps to capture the essence of the dancers. Keeler does a great job at explaining the culture and answering question you maybe asking yourself as you are reading. This book appeals to children because the first thing that you see in the book is children dancing and having fun, for the most part. The book is kind of lengthy, so I fear that while reading this book to kids, they would get tired of it. The illustrations are attractive and as an older person I am able to appreciate the book more than I think a child would be able to. ( )

This picture book tells the history of African dance and song, focusing on both the past and present of dance. The book does show genuine passion for African dance, and does a good job of representing the culture. It is, however, almost too good. The book is long and the text is dense. A lot of the historical information refers to places with familiarity that a lot of younger readers will have never heard of or retain from reading the book. The way each page is formatted in the exact same way, with one page focusing on the past of African dancing and the next page focusing on its present, is repetitive and gets boring quickly. I do enjoy the watercolor illustrations, but otherwise I don't feel that the author understands her audience. Not that children wouldn't want to learn about the subject, but would want to learn about it in a more fun way. The writing is more for sixth graders and above where as it's presented in children's book form. Won't be adding this to my library. ( )

This is an informational concept book. It is the story of various types of African dances. On one side of each page is a story about the images on the page-- what the instruments are, what the dancers are doing, and most importantly, what beat they are carrying out. The book includes lots of African words of different dialects, and some of the chants sang while dancing are included too. On the other side of the book, there are a few informational paragraphs about African tradition and different types of dances and beats. The book teaches about costumes, masked dancers, types of chants and songs, etc. on this side of the page. The book ends with a bit on a real, modern dance company in New York that is all about African dance. It includes photographs of the dancers and musicians in action. It also includes a map of Africa, a pronunciation guide, and the author's sources at the end. For this reason, the book is well-set in it's genre of informational concept book.
This book would be used for primary or intermediate grades.
Media: Ink and Wash & Watercolors
Style: The female author was also the illustrator. The theme of the book was how African dancing is not only joyous to perform, it can create a joyous heart. This was well portrayed by the faces of the dancers in the illustrations. The author(s) were also intentional in their writing because each side story was poetic or rhythmic. This was helpful in illustrating the song and beat of African dancing. Even the words were arranged physically to match what was written (sometimes in a cirlce, etc).
This book could be used in a lesson in the arts, i.e. in a study of dance of various cultures.
This book could be used in a lesson or individual project about African culture, including language and tradition. ( )
