Each of the issues of the Supergirl title collected in this volume are strong, with the best easily managing levels of excellence, but they work best as self-contained units. While there are storylines which connect the issues included herein, with an exploration of what exactly Zor-El might have been up to in sending Kara forming the main structural backbone of the collection, the lack of real organic unity or cohesiveness to the trade as a whole is the real major weakness of the collection--although in comparison to its predecessor, the near-schizophrenic Supergirl: Candor, this looks like an exemplar of Aristotelian poetics.
But looking at it in terms of an ongoing series with no end in sight, for which the basic unit is not the trade paperback but instead the issue, I'm not sure that demanding that the story be told in book-sized arcs is necessarily the best thing for Kara's story. Isn't it more important that each issue provides a deeper exploration and development of Kara's character? That's precisely what writer Joe Kelly excels at in this volume, giving us insight into Kara's basic adolescent angst from all sorts of different angles in the assorted vignettes which make up the trade. In the end, as fractured and fragmented as the collection might seem, it is no more so than that of the soul and psyche of Supergirl herself. ( )
