Fiction. Mystery. Historical Fiction. HTML:For everyone who loves Jane Austen . . . a marvelously entertaining new series that turns the incomparable author into an extraordinary sleuth!

On a visit to the estate of her friend, the young and beautiful Isobel Payne, Countess of Scargrave, Jane bears witness to a tragedy. Isobel's husband—a gentleman of mature years—is felled by a mysterious and agonizing ailment. The Earl's death seems a cruel blow of fate for the newly married Isobel. Yet the bereaved widow soon finds that it's only the beginning of her misfortune . . . as she receives a sinister missive accusing her and the Earl's nephew of adultery—and murder. Desperately afraid that the letter will expose her to the worst sort of scandal, Isobel begs Jane for help. And Jane finds herself embroiled in a perilous investigation that will soon have her following a trail of clues that leads all the way to Newgate Prison and the House of Lords—a trail that may well place Jane’s own person in the gravest jeopardy.

The Lost Memoirs of Jane Austen por Syrie James (Caramellunacy)
Caramellunacy: Both are written with a similar conceit - Jane's diaries found and footnoted by the editor/author. "Unpleasantness" has Jane solving a murder mystery to clear her friend, while "Lost Memoirs" delves into the possible romance that inspired Austen's greatest works.… (mais)

Jane Austen has turned into a successful sleuth in this novel ! She is called upon to investigate a murder that threatens the victim's young wife of slander,, adultery, and murder! The trail of clues leads all the way from Newgate Prison to the House of Lords.

A well written story by Stephanie Barron that emulates the style and times of the literary writings of the notable author Jane Austen, this is the first of a series. ( )

Decided to re-read because I love this series — the audiobook version is less satisfying to me than the paper books, but I’m not sure why. Anyway, it’s a solid mystery and Jane as sleuth works well in the context. Good stuff. ( )

I like mysteries, I love the Regency era, and I enjoy Jane Austen. There was much for me to enjoy in this book. While it falls squarely into the cozy mystery genre, the book's footnote's just tickled me and sold the whole notion to me. Like so many novels of the period, this story is slow-moving, setting the stage, introducing characters, exploring life as it was, and moving the villains into place.

The author did play fair with the reader; the clues were there for who did the dastardly deed. Did I guess it before the great reveal? I had suspicions but wasn't at all sure.

So yes, I would suggest this for cozy mystery fans who enjoy the Regency, but who aren't too stuffy about "This Would Never Happen!" The next book in the series is in my "to read" pile. ( )

I enjoyed most of the book but the ending was meh. Not a keeper. ( )

1802 and Jane Austen is staying with her friend Isobel Payne, at the home of her husband Lord Scargrave. But when the Earl dies suspicion is thrown onto the newly married Isobel. Isobel asks Jane to discover the truth.
Enjoyed this well-written cozy mystery which has the added bonus of the character of Jane Austen. Very good solid start to the series. ( )
