When a young woman moves to NYC with her husband from India, she battles culture shock and despair. Sometimes funny, often tragic, this book is insightful and poignant. And, as one of the other reviewers said: "surprisingly dark." I suppose the book's ending is deliberately enigmatic (?). ( ) p. 43 "She did not want to carry any relics from her old life; given another chance she could be a more exciting person, take evening classes perhaps, become a librarian. She had heard that many Indian wives in the States became librarians." Stories of women's lives have been among my favorite reads. This powerful story is of a woman sent off to a life she did not want with a man she did not want to a country she did not want. Day after day of sitting in an apartment with nothing to do and nowhere to go, contemplating nine ways of killing herself. A dark story that left me feeling sad for women without choices. The ending? Was it real or was it fantasy? Dimple seemed lost and confused about what was real and what was not real. I was left unsure about the ending. This is the story of an arranged marriage in India followed immediately by an immigration. The bride is depressed for many reasons and finds adjustment to marriage and relocation very difficult. The story is grim and very sad however there is quite a stunning and shocking ending which is why I recommend it so highly. sem críticas | adicionar uma crítica
A stunning novel of cultural confusion, violence, and assimilation from the award-winning author of The Middleman and Other Short Stories. Mukherjee writes with beautiful precision and just the right density of detail. There is an unlikely marriage of Jane Austen and Nathaniel West in her words.-- The Village Voice.
