The Mirror and Me is a book about a young boy who has recently moved to New York from Cape Town. He has trouble fitting in, and gets made fun of because he isn't from New York. Trying to fit in, he gets new clothes, tries to talk differently and act tough. None of this works, and when he goes home he can't see himself in the mirror. He yells at the mirror, asking why. The mirror eventually tells him that the reason he can't see himself is because he hasn't been true to himself; he's been trying to act like someone else. Once he becomes at peace with this, all ends well.

I really liked this story; I felt it had a great message, and the lyrical quality of this "hip hop story" made it more effective. The illustrations were beautiful and very realistic. There is a message at the end of the book that sums this story up: "...Be proud, be strong, be you, and stay you. Then, you will always love what you see". ( )
