A London teen whose father left years ago decides to rescue an urn (with the ashes of an old lady) from a cab company shelf. The more he learns about who she was, then more he learns that his missing father maybe isn't worthy of the hero worship he's been giving him.
The plot is fun and interesting, but I never warmed to the main character. *shrug* ( )

Lucas Swain har ingen aning om vilka konsekvenser det slumpartade beslutet att ta en taxi hem kommer få på hans liv. Det gör nämligen att han möter Violet Park, som trots att hon ligger död i en urna kommer påverka hans liv för all framtid. Violet Park är nämligen ett mysterium värt att forska i, men det visar sig att lösningen är mer ovälvande för egen del än han förväntat sig.

Jenny Valentines böcker tenderar att vara en gåta, där lösningen leder åt andra håll än man förväntat sig. Så också denna gång. Som vanligt beskriver hon karaktärerna träffsäkert och hon kan konsten att låta sina berättelser utspela sig i familjer som håller på falla samman alternativt utsatta miljöer utan att det för den sakens skull är berättelsen huvudsakliga handling. Eftersom jag är ett fan att Valetines sätt att skriva böcker på, hennes humor och sättet de är uppbyggda så gillar jag även denna bok. ( )

This was really good. I thought at first that it's a ghost story, being there's the word 'dead' in the title. But it turns out to be a family story, of coping up with the loss of a family member. Lucas's father may not be dead, but he may as well be for the ones he left behind.

I don't think Lucas finding Violet's urn was a coincidence. For me, it was divine intervention. It was like life's way of letting Lucas know what kind of person his father was. And in the process, it also helped him come to terms with himself, with his mother and with everything he believed in about his father. He may not get his father back but he learned to move on. ( )

Es gäbe viele Gründe, weshalb Violet Park Lucas Swain gleichgültig sein könnte. Sie ist alt. Sie ist tot. Sie liegt in einer Schachtel im Regal. Und doch verändert sie sein Leben.Es kommt nicht oft vor, dass der 16-jährige Lucas Swain Freundschaften schließt. Er ist lieber für sich, denkt nach, grübelt herum. So ist es für ihn ein richtiges Ereignis, als er sich mit Violet Park anfreundet, denn Violet ist - tot. Und Lucas rettet ihre Urne. Das erste Mal hörte Lucas von Violet in einem kleinen Minicar-Büro, mitten in der Nacht. Ihre Überreste stehen in einer Schachtel auf einem Regal. Allein die Tatsache, dass sie einmal gelebt hat und nun bis in alle Ewigkeit in einem verräucherten Büro stehen muss, setzt Lucas so zu (mal davon abgesehen, dass er eine Nanosekunde glaubt, sie würde ihn aus der Urne heraus um Hilfe anrufen), dass es für ihn zu einer Mission wird, herauszukriegen, wer diese Frau war. Was er erfährt, lässt ihn sein eigenes Leben besser verstehen.

A teenage boy is troubled by the absence of his father who went missing when he was 10. Whilst in a taxi office in the middle of the night he discovers an intriguing urn of ashes that were left behind in a taxi and sit almost forgotten upon a shelf. The ashes of Violet Park seem to haunt him and as he starts investigating her life he stumbles upon information about his father and how they are all connected. A refreshing storyline and an interesting and well told tale. Recommended. ( )
