PFL Genre: Informational Critique: This book is an excellent example of informational, as it conveys the concept of negative numbers in a story that is relatable for children, and puts the concept into real-world context for them Summary: Perry the penguin needs to save up 9 clams to buy an ice scooter. However, every time he saves, he usually ends up needing to spend some, so sometimes he owes clams (negative money) and sometimes he is owed money (positive clams). Through monetary responsibility and understanding of negatives, he learns to save up enough to buy his scooter and then some. Style: The author Uses personification in order to bring the characters to life for this book. He gives them human characteristics so that they can experince the human problem of money issues, thus giving the book its plot Media: The book doesn't say but it looks like watercolor and ink Perry the Penguin wants an ice scooter just like his friends, more than anything. After saving up and spending his clams to buy the special scooter, he finally comes up with nine to buy it. This is a good read aloud for young children learning math skills that teach numbers that are less than zero. http://www.stuartjmurphy.com/books/level_1/ This website is abbout the author, Stuart J.
