This book was such a great read! I really am itching to get my hands on the second book in this saga. It is beautifully written and the story has so much heart in it. The characters are amazing and the twists and turns it takes are fantastic. I listened to the audio book as well and loved the narration and how the footnotes are read aloud. It is a lot of fun and I cannot wait to see where the second book takes me. ( )

This is a great book. It starts off a little slow, but that’s due to the immense amount of world-building taking place. It’s the first book in the series, but it becomes apparent pretty quickly that there’s a lot that happened before the first scene takes place; plenty of allusion and foreshadowing.

I wasn’t super sure how I felt about Peterson’s world at first, so many things were so close to ours, just minor differences that I couldn’t decide if they were charming or annoying (totatoes in your garden? groaches scuttling about in the dark?) I also wasn’t sure about the light-hearted tone of the book, especially since from the beginning, it’s obvious that darker things are afoot. In the end, once the action started up, it didn’t often slow down, the goofy similarities proved easy to accept and get used to, and the light-heartedness of the tone provided a necessary balance to the peril and darkness in the story, especially considering it’s written for kids.

The story is exciting, the characters are charming and very much lovable, and there’s a lot to look forward to with 3 more books in the series. ( )

Loved it! What a great world Petersen has created! And I confess, having finished this first part, i feel like he was just setting the table. Can't wait for the rest of the story. ( )

Name: On The Edge of The Dark Sea of Darkness
Author: Andrew Peterson
Genre: Children Fiction, Fantasy, Sci-fi
Age: 6
Review:
Beautiful and enchanting cover.
This is the story of three siblings; Janner Igiby, Tink and their crippled sister Leeli. These three are gifted children and are loved by their noble mother and grandfather, who was once a pirate.
Fangs of Dang has crossed the Dark Sea to rule the land with his evil and malicious intent. He pursue the Igibys who hold the secret to the lost legend and jewels of good King Wingfeather of the Shining Isle of Anniera.
Now, the three children has to use their gifts to survive against the venomous Fangs of Dangs, who will stop at nothing to fulfill his evil pursuit.
A quirky, thrilling and enchanting story which will keep you engaged throughout the book. Peterson is a master storyteller with his quirky writing style and a good sense of humour.
He presents a tale for children of all ages, along with the beautiful illustrations throughout the pages which will keep the reader's undivided attention. ( )

On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness is about three siblings living outside of a small town that is, you guessed it, on the edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness. The town, and indeed the whole country, are ruled over by ruthless lizard people, the Fangs of Dang, who came from across the sea nine years ago. The story begins when Janner and his siblings get on the wrong side of a Fang. I expected things to take off from there but they really didn’t. In fact every couple chapters something would happen and I would expect the plot to finally get going but... it didn’t. The whole thing could have been shortened to a couple chapters and stuck at the beginning of the second book and nothing would have been lost, because nothing really happens for the majority of this story. Minor skirmishes, small adventures, all leading up to- what? We don’t get to find out until the last few chapters. I feel like I’m seriously missing something because most of the reviews are amazing but I would probably have to read the rest of the books to find out and I’m not going to do that. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. ( )

[Introduction] The old stories tell that when the first person woke up on the first morning in the world where this story takes place, he yawned, stretched, and said to the first thing he saw, "Well, here we are."
[Chapter 1] Janner Igiby lay trembling in his bed with his eyes shut tight, listening to the dreadful sound of the Black Carriage rattling along in the moonlight.
