As a fifteen year old white kid in Birmingham, 1963, I personally witnessed many of the events described in this riveting book. As I read this book, the memory of the violence and emotion of those six months came pouring back into my mind. I had several really close "colored" friends and saw them beaten, bitten, and hosed day after day during the "Children's March" in May of 1963. I heard and felt the shock wave that destroyed Sixteenth Street Baptist church which was less than a mile from my home. I whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone who desires to know what really happened when the horrible racism that WAS Birmingham in 1963 was finally confronted by Reverend Shuttlesworth and his street soldiers.
