It has a kind of 80's YA science fiction feel to it. Merging a simplistic worldbuilding (no addressing of the science that underpins the society, and very little background on the society) with a fairly simple plot-line and a protagonist with no private life and very little past makes for a pretty straightforward story.
The epiphanies and moral ambiguity experienced by the protagonist does add a bit of depth to the story, as does the interactions between her and the alien she protects.

The first person present tense narrative is a bit grating at times, but in general it works. ( )
