Fear No Evil
3 Stars

When 18-year-old Lucy Kincaid is abducted by an online predator, her family and friends mobilize to locate and rescue her. In a race against time, the Kincaids only hope is former FBI agent Kate Donovan who has all of the inside information on the sadistic killer who has Lucy. Together with forensic psychologist Dillon Kincaid, Kate works tirelessly both on and offline to find Lucy before its too late.

The weakest installment in the trilogy mainly due to the lackluster romance and the gratuitous descriptions of Lucy's ordeal.

While Lucy's suffering at the hands of her abductor is to be expected, the repeated descriptions of her being raped are completely unnecessary. Once was more than enough to get the message across, and the excessive repetition has the problematic effect of desensitizing the reader, which is counter to the author's intent.

Speaking of Lucy, her behavior in this book is TSTL. She is well aware of the dangers of internet predators, yet still enters into a secret online relationship in defiance of her family's warnings. This along with her actions later in the book present her as a childish and immature young woman.

Kate and Dillon are likable characters, but they do not work as a romantic couple. The first 75% of the book barely mentions any attraction or intimacy between them at all, thus the sexual relationship that develops toward the end feels contrived. In fact, Kate has more chemistry with Dillon's twin brother, Jack, than with Dillon himself.

The secondary cast is fleshed out well, especially the villain and his psychological makeup, which contributes to the tension and suspense of the story. The appearance of Quinn Peterson and his wife, Miranda, from The Hunt is an added bonus.

Overall, the classification of this book as romantic suspense is problematic as it is more of a thriller than a romance. ( )

Started Easter Friday (a National Holiday in Germany, where I live) April, 18th, 2014.
This book starts the back-story of Lucy Kincaid, so it might be a good idea, to read it before all the Lucy Kincaid books.
As I read some books in the wrong order, that is not so important, but for me Lucy Kincaid and the theme of e-crimes or Cybercrimes is one of the most interesting ones in these books.
As with the other 2 from the No Evil-Series this is again very bloody, with a high body-count and like most of her books, once again a predictable ending. Also again very brutal scenes, snuff, murder, rape, be warned. And a look in some very disturbed minds.
Little romance, one short sex-scene and lots of action keep the tension high, very good again, like the other 2 from the series.
Also not too long, which I rather appreciate, as I sometimes get the feeling the writer gets paid by the word.
Highly recommended page-turner. Despite the ending 5 stars. ( )

A gripping romantic suspense that had me hooked from beginning to end with is fast paced chilling action. It took awhile for the romance to get started but absorbing plot more than compensated. Psychiatrist Dillon teams up with FBI agent Kate to catch a sadistic killer who kidnapped his sister.

Allison Brennan: 5.00:
Allison Brennan is a favorite author. She knows how to tell a story that grabs your attention at the first page and keeps it until the last sentence.

Fear No Evil: 4.95:
Another well-written, intriguing, tension-filled, 'can't put this book down' read. Brennan did not waste a minute before drawing one deep into the story and keeping the emotional anxiety and 'edge of your seat' suspense at a razor's edge. Brennan rounded off the story by throwing in just a touch of romance.

Hero: 4.9:
Dillon Kincaid: Not your typical bad-boy hero sent to catch the bad guys using his might and his gun. Dillon is a perfect example of how attractive an intelligent man can be. With his strong sense of self-worth, strength of will, reasonableness, and good looks, Dillon came across as the kind of man you want to stand by your side and guard your back in a crisis.

Heroine: 4.0:
Katherine "Kate" Donovan: Kate is the kind of heroine whose strength of will and stubborn determination saw her through many a crisis -- just the kind of heroine needed for a romantic suspense book. Underneath that steel will was a compassionate nature that wins your heart.

You had to like someone who went balls to the wall when they believed in something. (Mick, page 170)

Story Line: 5.0:
A truly chilling story line, featuring a remorseless villain who kidnaps young women to feature their rape and death on a live webcast. Kate has been chasing Trask (the villain) for five years and when Trask kidnaps Dillon's youngest sister, Lucy, they unite forces (even though Kate was initially unwilling) to find Trask and save Lucy. The story included plenty of twists and turns regarding the investigation as well as addressing the distant relationship between brothers.

Action: 4.5:
Plenty of action scenes move the story along at a strong, fast pace.

Emotion: 4.0:
Several emotions were aroused during the telling of this book. {1} Aghast horror at the rape scenes. This book will be impossible for some to read because of the realistically portrayed actions of the villain and his henchmen to Lucy (even though Brennan did an excellent job of restricting the details about the rape to its emotional devastation rather than to its graphic description). {2} Compassion towards the entire Kincaid family as they witness this brutality to their sister. {3} An emotional connection to Dillon and Kate as they weave their way into your heart.

Romance: 1.5:
The romance factor of this book definitely took a back seat to the suspense. It took a while for Dillon and Kate to became aware of each other (probably because of the heinous nature of the villain they were facing). But once Dillon and Kate found that they were deeply attracted and emotionally invested in the other, there was no hem-hawing around -- bam -- they were in love.

Sensuous: 2.0:
Brennan included a heated, spicy, emotional love scene to solidify the connection between Dillon and Kate. Thankfully, Dillon was strong enough to command his own place in the twosome and not let Kate's overwhelmingly strong personality subdue his more laid back sense of self.

Suspense: 5.0:
Brennan usually increases the suspense and tension in her books, chapter by chapter. But in Fear No Evil the reader is mired in fear and tension almost from the get go -- because the horror Lucy is facing and that digital counter is always present in the back of your mind. Yes, the suspense factor in the story continues to increase but that underlying fear and sympathy for Lucy hardly ever diminishes.

Secondary Characters: 5.0:
Brennan is particularly skilled at including wonderfully written secondary characters. Brennan richly details the villain's boyhood and mindset as well as supporting his reign of terror with two henchmen: {1} Roger Morton and {2} Denise Arno. The supporting cast of good guys that added a rich flavor to the story included: {1} Jack Kincaid, {2} Lucy Kincaid, {3} Connor Kincaid, {4} Carina Kincaid, {5} Patrick Kincaid, {6} Quinn Peterson, {7} Jeff Merritt, {8} Mick Mallory, and {9} Abigail "Abby" Resnick.

This is the last book of the “Evil” trilogy with the first two being “Speak No Evil” and “See No Evil” The saying goes, “save the best for last”. That is what Allison Brennan did. I feel it is the best of the three.

I was disappointed in the second in the series and wasn’t expecting such a captivating read.

Trask has kidnapped another young girl. It’s been five years since he had killed Kate Donavon’s friend and boyfriend. For five years Kate has been in hiding spending all her time trying to find Trask.

The victim’s brothers are involved in their sister’s rescue. Together with the FBI, it is a chase with time. They have to save her before time runs out.

This book may be not be for everyone. There are parts of it that are graphic and may be too much for some.

Although there are so many things are going on, I never lost track of the story or the characters. This was a page turner. Half way through the book the story climaxed to a point I thought the rest of the book couldn’t compete. I was wrong. It only got better. There was never a dull moment ( )
