Hunger Games surprised me a lot. It turned out to be one of the best books I've read this year. Now I understand what all the hype was about. Spoilers: This is exciting, sad, suffocating, painful, intelligent and cruel, and oh so good. This is a book where the heroine is exactly that: a heroine, a tough girl with real feelings and concerns, a human living in a world dominated by monsters. A sacrificial lamb who didn't have a childhood because she had to take care of her mother and sister. This amazing character has all my admiration and respect: she's a real female warrior who, even when she could get herself killed at anytime, trusted and took care of a 12 year old girl that reminded her of her little sister. It was easy to put myself in her shoes and suffer everything she went through along with her, but it was very hard to read this book. The sadistic, disgusting way the Capitol tricked her and Peeta into thinking there would really be two winners only to tell them that they woud have to stick to the original rules and kill the other at the end was where my hate for all of those monsters reached its limit. I hated them so much I thought I couldn't hate them more than that. I was so wrapped up in this story I couldn't stop thinking about it. I still can't. I love books with the power to make me feel that way.
In a future North America, where the rulers of Panem maintain control through an annual televised survival competition pitting young people from each of the twelve districts against one another, sixteen-year-old Katniss's skills are put to the test when she voluntarily takes her younger sister's place.
