Abstract: Contribution is made to the understanding and solutions of public problems involving chemistry in the foodsystem, designed to provide public policy makers with information and recommendations leading to sound decisions on key food system issues. Recommendations made in specific areas include: fertilizers, examination of alternate ammoniasources to ensure adequate supplies; pest control, continue studies of chemical and biochemical components of integrated pest management to extend wider use in the US food production system; crop production, expand photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation research; animal production, upgrade nonedible materials for animal feeds; fish production, expand research to enhance fish feeds, control disease, and develop sex-controlling chemicals; foodadditives; fresh food handling and storage; food preserving and processing; micronutrient fortification of foods; fabricated foods; special dietary foods (search for sugar and salt substitutes); unconventional food and feed sources;and chemical safety and benefits for food additives.
