Confuso? Não, de todo. Na verdade é muito fácil de seguir e tudo o que vai ficando em suspenso encontra resposta no final. Não há pontas soltas e o autor deu a todas as personagens o seu final, até às menos relevantes na narrativa. As personagens podem-se dividir em dois grupos: de um lado e num clima familiar e amigável; as irónicas e divertidas, sempre com uma resposta afiada na ponta da língua tornando os diálogos deliciosos. Do outro - os funestos - movem-se num ambiente sombrio, espelho de uma Barcelona que viveu dias negros de perseguições e morte. Desde o inicio do livro que se adivinha que por ali há um segredo tenebroso, um clima que pressagia uma desgraça qualquer,que nos vai envolvendo, mas só a poucas páginas de ser revelado se insinua a suspeita do que poderá ser. E é. Uma partida do destino tão injusta que dói e revolta. No final, a ideia de que o passado ficou lá atrás cai por terra. Volta com a força de um tornado,derruba sem piedade e com o peso esmagador do arrependimento, para devorar os restos daqueles farrapos de gente. Foram páginas duras, de vingança, mas também de perdão e reconciliação. Os últimos parágrafos são quase uma cópia da primeira página. Acaba como começou, dando continuidade à cumplicidade e à paixão pelos livros. Um livro extraordinário. Vai para a prateleira dos especias. The three illustrious meeters must surely have been drinking and they weave about a little, but steady remarkably as the pages go by. A boy named Daniel selects a novel from a library of rare books, enjoying it so much that he searches for the rest of the author's works, only to discover that someone is destroying every book the author has ever written.
