Written by Ross Campbell Art and cover by Campbell Surfer Girl Brody just got her leg bitten off by a shark. What's worse? Jake, her shark of an ex-boyfriend, is back and when it comes to Brody's couch, he's not budging. It's up to Brody and her BFF Louisa to embark on the roadtrip from hell, narrowly escaping weird hitchhikers and shark-infested nightmares, to get Jake out of their lives forever. This time it's personal! Two-time Eisner nominee Ross Campbell (Wet Moon, The Abandoned) puts punk rock on paper with his brutally honest characters and perversely lush artwork. I really liked the dream sequences, but the story fell fairly flat for me. I agree, too, with other reviewers here about the troubling hypersexualization. ( )

I loved the art style of this book. The gist of the story was good but too often the characters didn't ring true to me. I wanted to enjoy the story as much as I loved the art, but it just wasn't there for me. Hate to say it, but it read just too much like a guy's fantasy for me. ( )

I'm disappointed in Minx for publishing this book. They usually have such good titles. If the author of Water Baby was trying to make the protagonist a feminist, girl-power character, he missed by a long shot. The characters and the comic come off as crude, trashy, and unintelligent. The ending fell flat and was very unsatisfying. Don't waste your time with this one.

Bought this at this year's CAPTION, from the Astral Gypsy stall run by Al Davison using his shop's stock. He highly recommended all the titles in the Minx line, though without having read this specific book. I can add my recommendations both to the line in general and to this book in particular.

It's a quasi-realistic tale with lots of unsettling dream sequences. The story is on the slight side - the bulk of it is about a road-trip with uncongenial companions, looking for a cathartic ending to a traumatic time - but the characters are well-delineated, real, solid. My favourite aspect to it is the realism of the main character struggling to cope with a massive change in her life - in the form of her leg having been bitten off by a shark while she surfed - combined with the knock-on effect of that trauma in her life both awake and asleep.

The art is really pretty & accomplished, and at the same time it's good to see that the artist doesn't shy away from the "ugliness" of the artifical leg and stump of the main character, despite otherwise drawing hot chicks and hot guys. I wondered a bit what sort of young female character would be likely to keep her artificial leg on show rather than hiding it away - was it realistic or was it a schtick on the part of the comic's creator? - but in the end I reckoned that the way she was depicted (tattooed rebel unconcerned with a lot of ideas of mainstream beauty) explained that quite sufficiently. Yeah, 's alright. There's not a hell of a lot of plot, and I'm not too keen on the "girl-obsesses-over-boy" Minx titles. Bonus for multi-diverse main character though. ;-) ( )
