It's Christmastime in London and Rafe Bowman has arrived from America for his arranged meeting with Natalie Blandford, the very proper and beautiful daughter of Lady and Lord Blandford. His chiseled good looks and imposing physique are sure to impress the lady in waiting and, if it weren't for his shocking American ways and wild reputation, her hand would already be guaranteed. Before the courtship can begin, Rafe realizes he must learn the rules of London society. But when four former Wallflowers try their hand at matchmaking, no one knows what will happen. And winning a bride turns out to be more complicated than Rafe Bowman anticipated, especially for a man accustomed to getting anything he wants.… (mais)

I'm starting to have real issues with these "historical" romances where everyone acts really modern and also the supposedly nice heroes have no issues of any kinds of sexual relations with women whose life they would ruin. There was another love story in this book that I would've rather read, since that guy seemed to be the better option for anyone. I get that people did probably a lot of stuff even if it wasn't accepted publicly (sort of, just don't get caught), but still I'm pretty sure that at least the women would've thought a little bit more about what would happen to them. And if not, then don't tell me how smart and stuff they were. I need a real historical romance or then just let's stay in modern times. ( )

A Wallflower Christmas - Kleypas
3 stars

This is a reunion Christmas story with characters from the popular Wallflowers series, another set of Victorian romances. I’d only read one book from that set, but it was sufficient to completely acquaint me with the characters. The honorary wallflower of this book is another neglected country cousin stuck in the role of ‘companion’ to a spoiled rich girl. I enjoyed the Christmas atmosphere, the supportive female friendships and the comedy of the toupee in the tree. The excessively sexual instant romance….not so much. ( )

This novella starts with a saccharine recounting of all the previous Wallflower books. Struggle past it, or skip it, as it will tell you nothing at all that you don't already know from reading the previous books in the series. It was trite and read like it was written by a seventh-grader--in other words, far from the author's usual standards.

That aside, my complaints are, unfortunately, rather substantial. There was something likable about Rafe Bowman, but it was hard to hold onto thoughts of his likability when he began the book by repeatedly assaulting the heroine. Minutes after receiving a lecture about how demure and timid English girls are, he decided to kiss the heroine (who was not his intended fiancee) in a forceful, overbearing manner. The next time he sees her, he does it again, even despite her protests. He's supposed to be overwhelmed by the strength of his own desire, which is definitely standard fodder for the pages of romance novels; but it was too much. He never wooed her, he never even tried to resist his animal instincts, it seemed. It all happened too fast, with too much intensity, and I doubt a sweet, sheltered wallflower like Hannah Appleton would have managed to fall in love with someone who was forcing himself on her so frequently. Wouldn't she have been frightened?

This story committed one of my personal romance novel pet peeves, too. All told, these two are in love after having only 3 notable interactions. They meet kiss, they meet again kiss/Hannah gets ravished, they decorate a tree together flirt in full view of 8 other people, and by then they are already in love with one another. I find insta-lust tolerable and insta-love nearly unbearable, but I can overlook it if a story then goes on long enough to allow for the characters to build a relationship and actually know each other. I cannot overlook insta-lust and love in three brief meetings. These characters are not 15-year-old girls swooning over a cute boy. This is not how people fall in love.

Then there was Lillian. It's obvious that Lillian was Lisa Kleypas' favorite of the wallflowers. Unfortunately, she was my least favorite. I found her mostly unlikable, despite her appearance in all 5 of these books. She often behaves badly (rudely) and makes highly questionable decisions (such as, in the first book, trying to force a marriage proposal out of a lord for Annabelle's benefit). Even in her own story, she was difficult to like. So why does she get so much page time? I was happy to see all of the other Wallflowers get some additional pages in this story; particularly, I was happy to get to spend a brief moment revisiting Evie and Sebastian because we hadn't really gotten to see much inside their marriage since their story ended. But the fact that Lillian gets so many additional pages here and an entire subplot of her own really frustrated me. I feel like we hardly spent any time with Annabelle and Simon since their story ended and they got only a brief romantic reunion in this story. Then Daisy and Matthew were not seen interacting with one another at all. Altogether, it was just a big disappointment.

Also, why dress the girl up for the ball in borrowed finery and let her spend only 30 seconds in the ballroom before fleeing? Why?! I'm outraged on Hannah's behalf. Goddamnit, you do not mess up a woman's hair before anyone has had a chance to admire it! ( )

This tender love story begins with a gathering at Stone Cross Park, including all four wallflowers, their husbands and families. Rafe Bowman, is coming from America to meet his future bride, that much to his dismay, his father has picked out for him, and the Wallflowers, including his sisters, go about in assisting him in this endeavor, not before having ever courted a Englishwoman before, and a member of the Ton as well. When he arrives he firsts meets her companion, Hannah and finds that from their first meeting, he has a fervent desire for this woman and their interaction with each other stimulates his senses. Hannah, companion to the woman he is suppose to marry, is surprised when he focuses his attention toward her. She finds him arrogant, bold, cynical, but soon entrances her in a whirlwind of his kiss. At first she think its just infatuation that is between them, but as Christmas time draws closer, she begins to realize that her feelings for him reach far beyond infatuation and toward genuine and passionate love... A Wallflower Christmas is the fifth and last installment in the Wallflower series that was written by astounding author Lisa Kleypas. When I first started this book, I didn't know what to expect out of this story, I thought it might be enjoyable, but after reading the whole story within a couple of hours, its a classic love story, with the enchanting Christmas scene that even makes it even more magical. The character interaction between Rafe and Hannah was playful, witty and very amusing for this reader, there was also a intensity about their relationship, both on a physical and emotional level. This was such a well written story, that I found the story seemed all too riveting and entrancing. From the first page to the last page I couldn't stop reading, I was so drawn into this love story, that I think I forgot my surrounding. A Completely unforgettable love story that you better get a box of tissues, you will need it, it will bring many laughs and at other times many tears, that will tie up your heart strings to no end!!! A Chanting Love Story To Remember!!!

My Favorite Quote
"Then I will have to show you what happens to women who stand in my way." Before she could comprehend what was happening, one powerful arm had brought her against his hard masculine body. With his other hand, he grasped the nape of her neck, and tilted her head backward. And His mouth took hers. ( )

A Wallflower Christmas
3.5 Stars

Synopsis
The time has come for Rafe Bowman, an incorrigible rake, to settle down and he travels to England to meet his prospective wife. However, it is not the socially desirable Lady Natalie Blandford who captures his fancy but her poor relation and companion, Hannah Appleton. Can he, with the help of his intrepid sisters and their friends, find happiness with the woman he loves?

Note: It is necessary to read the Wallflowers series first so as not to ruin the other books.

Review
Enjoyable opposites attract romance between a cool-headed Englishwoman and a hot-headed American rake.

Hannah and Rafe are cute together, however their relationship is a bit rushed. Hannah is practical and passionate but she is too forgiving of her spoiled, selfish and obnoxious cousin Natalie.

Rafe is a sexy rake and knows how to write a sexy, steamy love letter. Unfortunately, much of the action resolving the obstacles to his and Hannah's romance takes place "off-screen" which detracts from the overall plot. The excerpts from Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol are tedious and unnecessary. If I had wanted to read it, I would have.

All in all, a light, quick and enjoyable read, and it was great catching up with the other wallflowers, particularly Lillian and Marcus (who is still my favorite Wallflower hero) and Evie and Sebastian. ( )
