===============================================

If you have grown up with the Indiana Jones movies and just about adore them, as I have and do, this delicious and profusely illustrated folio is a wonderful opportunity to relive them on paper. If you know some kid who is not familiar with Indiana Jones, just give him – or her – this book and see what happens.

This is not, of course, “the ultimate guide”. No such thing exists for something as huge as the Indiana Jones franchise. In addition to the three great movies from the 80s – Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), The Temple of Doom (1984) and The Last Crusade (1989) – it also includes one last (for now) picture, one TV series (The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones, 22 feature-length episodes, 1999) and quite a few novelisations, comic books, video games and other spin-offs. All this wealth of material has been ingeniously combined to produce this book. The numerous illustrations, including stills, drawings and maps, are reproduced in full colour and stunning quality. They illustrate every exotic setting Indy ever visited and every wild adventure he had there. The text is minimal but quite serviceable. It tells Indy’s story with an effective combination of detail and brevity, as a sort of hybrid between a graphic novel and a non-fiction account. In the last part, some insight into the making of the movies and the magnitude of the franchise is also provided; I actually didn’t know the thing is so huge.

The major criticism usually raised against this book is that the last movie is not given the same amount of space as the classic trilogy. For my part, this is the best thing about the volume. The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) is distressingly mediocre in every possible way. The plot is trite and stupid: aliens in the jungle, Indy’s son, Russians as arch-enemies. Indeed! The special effects are ridiculous, the humour hackneyed, the characters dull. And Shia LaBeouf, judging by his foreword here and his performance there, is just as poor a writer as he is an actor. In no way whatsoever can this movie be compared with the trio of classics. It’s nice to have it here for the sake of completeness, but it’s much for the better that more space wasn’t wasted on it.

Unless you have some deep-seated aversion to the character of Indiana Jones, archaeologist, amorist, adventurer and everything else, it’s difficult to see how you may fail to enjoy this book. Even if you are a die-hard fan and it contains nothing you didn’t know before, it still remains a magnificent pictorial adventure. Get it. You will not regret it. I promise. ( )
