Amusingly, due to the library not having a copy of [b:The Eye of the World|228665|The Eye of the World (Wheel of Time, #1)|Robert Jordan|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1337818095s/228665.jpg|2008238], the first two times I read the series, I actually started with [b:The Great Hunt|233649|The Great Hunt (Wheel of Time, #2)|Robert Jordan|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1437870280s/233649.jpg|1574475]. While the Eye of the World could arguably stand alone (albeit with a somewhat unsatisfying feeling, given the sheer quantity of untapped potential in the world building), it's in the Great Hunt that things really start getting crazy.

Rand is just now starting to understand what being the Dragon Reborn could mean. Perrin has a connection to the wolves, something very old, come new again. Mat is still cursed by his dagger and yet he's the one to finally sound the Horn. You have the first hints of parallel universes and world hopping, along with the World of Dreams--which will turn out to be rather important to the universe all together--along with a few more Forsaken coming out of the woodwork. Lanfear... Lanfear proves that being loved by a power hungry hundred/thousand year old super powerful jealous woman can be... interesting.

And there's the Seanchan. I'd forgotten that they showed up just this soon. And seeing the One Power being used as a weapon in full after an entire book of people holding back. With an entire people absolutely convinced they are in the right to enslave everyone who can channel. Despite the final battle of the book where the Seanchan advance and retreat with Ba'alzamon, it's hard to see them as evil. Deadly, dangerous, and with some seriously morally corrupt traditions. But this is a world where true evil exists. The Seanchan... are not it.

A worthy sequel. As I finish each book, I immediately want to go on.

Another thing I'm noticing on yet another reread: the amount of foreshadowing in these books in intense. While some few things in early books changes by the end, there are a number of prophesies that become readily apparently only on a reread. Once you're done with all 4.4M words? Give it another go. Worth it. :) ( )

The plot thickens. Another superb novel with a nail biting ending. Getting started with the next book right away. ( )

I actually preferred the first book in the Wheel of Time series over this one, and neither were that great to me. It seemed like after the adventures in the first one, the characters started over in this book (I see why it was suggested I skip #1). The story had a few interesting parts -- the alternate lines for instance -- but was a small reference in a larger story of mostly waiting around and moving places. ( )

A very good sequel further developing the adventures of Rand, Perrin, and Matt. New characters, and some favourite old ones or join them to I have a continuation adventure very similar to the first, yet exciting, gripping, and revealing. New enemies, with people that aren’t what they seem this is an excellent sequel to the first book. ( )

The Great Hunt is the sequel to Eye of the World, second book in Robert Jordan's epic series. The story continues to follow the protagonist Rand Al'Thor and his friends, as it introduces new characters and expands the story. Rand starts in Shienar, where the last book left off, training and preparing to go off on his own and keep the Aes Sedai away from him. But then dark friends invade, free the villain Fain, and steal the Horn of Valere along with Mat's very dangerous knife, and Rand, Perrin, Mat, and Loial go with a Shienarian military group to retrieve it.

There's an added story of a ship's captain and a group of Whitecloaks, neither of which really pay off. And there's a major new story of a mysterious invading force from across the sea, conquering parts of the west coast aided by strange beasts and women who can channel the One Power but who are essentially enslaved. The women of the first book (Nynaeve, Egwene, Min, and Elayne) get mixed up in this, and it all comes to a head in the finale.

I'm not sure I can manage 12 more volumes of this. The books are unnecessarily long- both so far have involved extensive travel around the continent, described in excruciating detail. It also bothers me that the main characters all seem to have Plot Armor, so it's hard to fear for anyone's safety. Part of this is tied to the conceit of the series, that there is a Pattern that is being woven, and that our heroes are just doing what they are meant to do by Destiny, as has been done in past turnings of the Wheel. Seems like there's a lack of free will then, which is uninteresting, but of course it also means nobody's part in the Pattern is going to be cut short by an arrow through the heart. I was also bothered by the strange appearance of a new character Selene, who is quite significant in the middle of the book but then disappears- I presume we'll see her again in a future volume.

On the plus side, Jordan is incredibly inventive. This world has magic bursting out of everywhere, much of it quite innovative and interesting. And he's not afraid to invent more characters at any time.
Maybe I'll limp along like this, liking the books well enough to start the next one, without committing whole heartedly. ( )

And it shall come to pass that what men made shall be shattered, and the Shadow shall lie across the Pattern of the Age, and the Dark One shall once more lay his hand upon the world of man. Women shall weep and men quail as the nations of the earth are rent like rotting cloth. Neither shall anything stand nor abide... Yet one shall be born to face the Shadow, born once more as he was born before and shall be born again, time without end. The Dragon shall be Reborn, and there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth at his rebirth. In sackcloth and ashes shall he clothe the people, and he shall break the world again by his coming, tearing apart all ties that bind. Like the unfettered dawn shall he blind us, and burn us, yet shall the Dragon Reborn confront the Shadow at the Last Battle, and his blood shall give us the Light. Let tears flow, O ye people of the world. Weep for your salvation.

--From The Karaethon Cycles: The Prophecies of the Dragon,

as translated by Ellaine Marise'idin Alshinn,
Chief Librarian at the Court of Arafel,
in the Year of Grace 231 of the New Era, the Third Age
And men cried out to the Creator, saying, O Light of the Heavens, Light of the World, let the Promised One be born of the mountain, according to the Prophecies, as he was in Ages past and will be in Ages to come. Let the Prince of the Morning sing to the land that green things will grow and the valleys give forth lambs. Let the arm of the Lord of the Dawn shelter us from the Dark, and the great sword of justice defend us. Let the Dragon ride again on the winds of time.
