Een korte biografie van Darwin wordt gevolgd door een condensatie van 'On the origin of species' en een filosofische analyse van de redenering erachter. Vervolgens beschouwingen over het Neodarwinisme, Lamarckisme, een lange verhandeling over de consilientie, een begrip geintroduceerd in 1840 (William Whewell: 'The philosophy of the inductive sciences'), in 1998 uitgewerkt door E.O.Wilson in 'Consilience, the unity of knowledge'. Na een beschouwing over Darwins visie op de afstamming van de mens wordt de invloed behandeld van het evolutionaire denken op biologische theorieen over o.a. genetica, systematiek, cladistiek, evo-devo, waarbij zo ongeveer alle grote denkers de revue passeren, maar ook op zaken ver buiten de natuurwetenschappen als moraal en religie (creationisme), het ontstaan van godsdienst, kennis en filosofie. Kortom een ware wetenschapshistorische en epistemologische monografie over de betekenis van de evolutietheorie op het hedendaagse denken.
