Audio Oct. 2017: Narrator Justine Eyre did a fabulous job. I really enjoyed the audio version of Angels' Blood. It was powerful and moving. I got more out of the audio then reading the book. I picked up things that I missed and got more out of Elena and Raphael's relationship as well as the friendship Raphael has with his Seven. I'm going out to get the next in audio. I recommend this series in audio and/or reading. Really it was wonderful!

~ 4.5 Angels’ Blood Stars ~

Angels’ Blood is book one in the Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh.

Lots of my blogger friends have been telling me for years now to pick up the Guild Hunter series, especially since I enjoy Nalini Singh’s Psy-Changling. I am so glad I picked up this book.

WOW. LOVED every page. I devoured Angels’ Blood from beginning to end. I was glued to the pages.

Vampires, Angels, Hunters and they are not what we have come to think of in the normal sense or what we are use to their roles being. Angel’s aren’t the good guys nor are they bad, same with the Vampier’s and well the Hunter’s don’t hunt to kill. It was quite a unique world set up.

Elena Deveraux is capable of handling herself well, is smart, tough and a little snarky. She is one tough warrior. I always enjoy reading about strong woman who can hold their own. Especially against strong male characters. Raphael, Archangel and one character I just don’t know how to describe. One minute I’m in awe, the next I’m pissed, and then frighten. He’s a force to be reckoned with. Singh does a great job keeping a balance between Elena and Raphael, that you can identify with both.

I’m so glad I picked up this series. I’m devouring the books one after the other and can’t get enough. It’s fast paced and action packed. Intruding the reader to a wide variety of new characters as well as our leads taking us on an emotional journey. Their is just so much to love and enjoy in the Guild Hunters series.

This book was so strange. So utterly strange.

The central premise of this book is actually quite good. Angels are real. They have no discernible divine connection but they are paranormal creatures with huge lifespans, great physical strength, beautiful wings as well as the ability to fly and a few other abilities. They exist in full human view and knowledge, and though they do not directly rule, they are the power behind all the governments. They also create vampires. Vampires must serve angels for a contractual period and then can live their own lives. The immortality of vampirehood has caused many humans to want to become vampires.

I liked this idea. I was extremely curious as to how modern history was shaped by the existence of angels. Did they allow world wars? Industrialisation? Why? Unfortunately the author did not give so much as a hint towards these issues which was quite disappointing. It made the worldbuilding seem incomplete and glossed over.

The basic idea of this book is the protagonist, (who tracks down rogue vampires) is recruited by an angel for a special mission. But from that point on, the book goes completely off the rails. Everybody keeps on wanting and trying to have sex. Now I know this is a PNR book and this sort of thing is to be expected but it went to the point that the primary mission was almost derailed and seriously delayed due to adults having poor impulse control. A lot of the plot development kept on getting interrupted with people thinking of sex, hinting at sex, demanding sex, remembering urges to have sex, arguing about sex and of course having sex. It was like reading a book with softporn commercial breaks.

The conclusion of the book was more or less predictable.

So why did I give it two stars and not one star? Because I love loud explosive action in my urban fantasy and this did have that.

I just keep on feeling frustrated that the author has squandered such a promising premise. Even in this book there are future plot and world hints that are tantalising. Now if only the author cut back the sex from 50% of the plot to maybe 20% it would be a really interesting series.

And worst of all I am getting urges to try out the sequels. I don't even know why. This book may be spreading poor impulse control as a contagious disease. ( )

This is such good urban fantasy. I love the diversity of the characters and how the book really delves into the matters of humanity and mortality, bringing up the question of where the line between good and evil truly lies. Nalini Singh's writing is something else. ( )

I really don't know about this one. It had some good bits but it just felt rushed a bit on the first readthrough. I've now read it through again and it's better but I just didn't seem to originally get that inner sigh of contentment for finishing a d... fine book that I was hoping for.

It's SOOO clearly leading onto the sequel as well, not that there's anything wrong with that but I personally wonder whether the foreshadowing could have been replaced with further expansion of some scenes and consequently I'd have been happier with it.

Not a bad read at all though. Just not as good as I was hoping. ( )

This one is a fast read. It's an unusual world of angels, vampires, and humans. That bit I liked. Kat Kennedy's review amusingly sums up the bigger issues I have with this one. The relationship between the two main characters is...erm...distractingly unhealthy. But there's some witty banter, and the characters intrigued me, and I'm hopeful book 1 is long setup for what happens in book 2 (like the weak pilot in a strong series). ( )
