Everything has a cost. And every act of magic exacts a price from its user-maybe a two-day migraine, or losing the memory of your first kiss. But some people want to use magic without paying, and they Offload the cost onto innocents. When that happens, it falls to a Hound to identify the spell's caster-and Allison Beckstrom is the best there is.Daughter of a prominent Portland businessman, Allie would rather moonlight as a Hound than accept the family fortune-and the strings that come with it. But when she discovers a little boy dying from a magic Offload that has her father's signature all over it, Allie is thrown into the high-stakes world of corporate espionage and black magic. Now Allie's out for the truth-and she must call upon forces that will challenge everything she knows, change her in ways she could never imagine, and make her capable of things that powerful people will do anything to control.… (mais)

In the world of Allie Beckstrom magic is a new technology. And if you use magic, it uses you as well. People must always remember to set a disbursement spell to offload their magic or suffer the consequences. Allie carries a notebook everywhere to record snippets of her life in the event magic steals any more memories. As a Hound, Allie has no choice but to use magic to see the trails left behind by those who misuse magic. When a boy is nearly killed by an illegal magical offload, Allie is called in to Hound the one responsible. But what she finds will send her down a road that even her keen senses won’t see coming.

What really drew me into this book was the magic system. If you don’t set a disbursement spell, magic will cause you pain in whatever way it chooses. The bigger the spell, the worse it will be. But even with a disbursement, you have to choose how you will feel the pain. And given that magic is a new technology, there is plenty of room for the system to expand. Devon Monk sets the stage for corporations to build new tech and discover new ways to use magic.

Now with most urban fantasy reads, there is romance tossed into the mix. Magic to the Bone is no different. Be advised the romance isn’t slow burning. It is more along the lines of instant attraction. But don’t let that stop you from reading this book if the type of romance isn’t your cup of tea. It certainly isn’t mine, but the characters and world kept me reading.

Allie is one of those strong female leads that are quick to bite back. She grew up privileged, but refuses to acknowledge it and forges her own path. And she doesn’t hesitate to help those who need her Hounding, even if they can’t afford it. You’ll see many instances where she puts the needs of others above her own, even if she knows she will take a beating.

Magic to the Bone is a fast-paced urban fantasy read. I highly recommend it to those who enjoy a strong female lead and unique magic systems. The romance bits can be a bit steamy, but overall I enjoyed visiting this world. ( )

A friend of mine loaned me the 2nd book in the series and I thought I'd read number 1 first so I checked this out. She said she didn't finish the 2nd one as it didn't make sense since she hadn't read #1, so good choice.

Urban fantasy is not really my genre, but I thought I'd give it a go. It was fun! Fast paced, hard boiled, tough talking chick as the main character, it was a real quick read.

Thankfully, no chapter long love scenes! In fact, if you didn't care for the action, just read a page or two, it changes like the weather.

The plot? Its about an alternative Portland that runs on magic. Allie is a Hound and she finds out if someone is practicing illegal magic for pay. Then everyone wants to kill her. Of course. And she meets a mysterious guy. Of course.

If you're into this sort of thing, its a fun and not too stressful of a read. Something to read at your mother in law's at Christmas. ( )

An original book with an amazing magical system, an interesting heroine, decent mystery/action elements, and a gritty edge.

In the world of Allie Beckstrom, magic demands a price- a headache, some bruises, death. She's the estranged daughter of an important, shady businessman, and gets caught up in a whirlwind of confusing murder, and persistent assassins.

The writing is really descriptive and sensual, and really gives you a good sense of the physical settings. It is a little plain/immature when it comes to the personal- reminiscent of your typical C-list teen works.

This is especially true of the romance, which is really where this turned from a 4 star book into a 3 star book for me. I just didn't really "buy" it. The romantic interest, Zay, was super closed off and secretive, so I didn't really have much of an idea of who he was as a person, which made Allie's interest in him too sudden/strong for me. Plus the romancey scenes (not the actual sex scenes, just the scenes that describe the romance) were weak, a little generic, a little underdeveloped.

Despite the disappointing romance, I am interested enough in the other parts of the world to pick up the sequel some time in the near future. If I were you, I'd give this book a shot, but wouldn't get too attached to the idea of it. ( )

So I give this a 3.5
A good story magic uses you back and Allie looses her memory essentially erasing everything that happens in the book interesting ( )

It was the morning of my twenty-fifth birthday, and all I wanted was a decent cup of coffee, a hot breakfast, and a couple hours away from the stink of used magic that seeped through the walls of my apartment building every time it rained.
