Biography & Autobiography. Nonfiction. HTML:In this New York Times bestseller, the White House chief usher for nearly three decades offers a behind-the-scenes look at America's first families.
J. B. West, chief usher of the White House, directed the operations and maintenance of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenueâ??and coordinated its daily lifeâ??at the request of the president and his family. He directed state functions; planned parties, weddings and funerals, gardens and playgrounds, and extensive renovations; and, with a large staff, supervised every activity in the presidential home. For twenty-eight years, first as assistant to the chief usher, then as chief usher, he witnessed national crises and triumphs, and interacted daily with six consecutive presidents and first ladies, as well as their parents, children and grandchildren, and houseguestsâ??including friends, relatives, and heads of state.

J. B. West, whom Jackie Kennedy called "one of the most extraordinary men I have ever met," provides an absorbing, one-of-a-kind history of life among the first ladies. Alive with anecdotes ranging from Eleanor Roosevelt's fascinating political strategies to Jackie Kennedy's tragic loss and the personal struggles of Pat Nixon, Upstairs at the White House is a rich account of a slice of American history that usually remains behind closed door

First Women: The Grace and Power of America's Modern First Ladies por Kate Andersen Brower (sweetbug)
sweetbug: Both books offer interesting portraits of the modern First Ladies, although West's book goes farther back (to Eleanor Roosevelt). West was the head butler at the White House, so his memoir is more reverential and less gossipy than Andersen Brower's, but Brower's book is interview-based and has a more modern spin.… (mais)

The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House por Kate Andersen Brower (sweetbug)
sweetbug: West was head butler at the White House and offers stories specifically about the modern (post-Eleanor Roosevelt) first ladies. Andersen Bower interviewed many former White House staff members (including Mr. West) and offers a larger context of staff interaction with modern presidents and First Families. Some stories overlap between the two books, but they are good companion pieces.… (mais)

I love learning about houses; whether it’s driving around town looking at neighborhoods, watching HGTV, touring famous houses, or pouring over pictures of houses. I’m also curious about how people live in their houses; from decorating styles to daily lifestyles. So when I came upon the audiobook, Upstairs at the White House: My Life with the First Ladies by J.B. West, during an Audible sale, my curiosity was piqued. I’ve often wondered how the Presidential family lives in the White House. Also, how do the families move in and out so quickly at inauguration times? This book satisfied all of my curiosities.

J.B. West worked at the White House for 28 years. For most of that time, he was in the role of Chief Usher and worked directly with the First Ladies. His career started with Roosevelt in office. Some of the highlights West wrote about included Eleanor’s projects, Pearl Harbor, and Roosevelt’s death while in office. This tragic loss resulted in Vice-President Truman taking over the Presidency. This was also West’s first experience assisting with major renovations of the White House residence, which occurred every time a new family moved in. West shared about the attempted assassination of President Truman.

Eisenhower was the next presidential family to...

One of my favourite books. It is a beautifully related collection of reminiscences about the job of Usher in the White House across six administrations and about the First Ladies in each case. ( )

What a little gem this turned out to be! Well written, behind-the-scenes account of Chief Usher West and the various First Ladies of the twentieth century. Deft portrait of family life in the White House. ( )

I really enjoyed this book. It changed a couple of my pre-conceived notions (I immediately added [b:Truman|2279|Truman|David McCullough|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1364681969l/2279._SY75_.jpg|1732395] to my to-read list after finishing that chapter) and it solidified others (Johnson doesn't really deserve a place in [b:Leadership: In Turbulent Times|38657386|Leadership In Turbulent Times|Doris Kearns Goodwin|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1531683409l/38657386._SY75_.jpg|60268060]). I came out much more conflicted on the Roosevelts as a pair, but much more invested in Eleanor. I thoroughly enjoyed the Eisenhowers but not so much the Nixons. And Jackie Kennedy... let's just say that there seemed to be a bit more similarities between her and Marilyn Monroe. You could tell that the author was somewhat smitten with her.

All in all, I found myself really respecting most of the women who have occupied and cared for the White House. ( )
