"Peter Stamm's best-selling debut novel, Agnes, now available for the first time in the United States. "Write a story about me," Agnes said to her lover, "so I know that you think of me." So he started to write the story of everything that had happened to them from the moment they met. At first, he works with Agnes to create a narrative that is most true to life, but as time passes and he grows more enamored with the narrative he has begun, he continues writing on his own, imagining a future for them after he reaches the present. Happy couples do not necessarily make for compelling reading, and as Agnes sees the unexpected plot he has planned for her, the line between fiction and reality begins to blur. In this unforgettable and haunting novel Stamm incisively examines the power of storytelling to influence thought and behavior, reaching a chilling conclusion"--… (mais)

"This is an interesting experiment on Stamm’s part. The narrator, like Stamm, is Swiss and a fiction writer (although a “failed” fiction writer, unlike Stamm). But does Stamm write like the narrator or does the narrator write like Stamm? The novel doesn’t let the reader in. The narrator, telling his story, keeps his reader at a distance. Stamm, writing a novel about an emotionally-cold narrator who writes a story about his relationship, keeps his reader at a distance. When the narrator starts writing the story of his love affair with Agnes, the reader gets an idea of why the narrator is as he is: he’s invested more in his writing than in his relationships. That might also explain why, after publishing a book of short stories, the narrator couldn’t complete the novel he was working on: imaginative writing requires taking risks, intellectually, emotionally, morally."

Characters need not be likeable, but if they aren't they at least should be interesting enough to hold my attention. This book fails, in my opinion, both conditions. While I enjoyed other books with unlikeable protagonists almost unduly, I couldn't wrap my head arround the sometimes strange sometimes borderline psychopathic actions of the main character. I don't need to understand every action of a character, but at least their motiviations should be internally consistent, even if the only consistency is seeming randomness. Here, Stamm fails to land it in either or the other category. The main character has no internal motivation, behaves completely irrational, but doesn't have any redeeming quality as a great character arc or being internally consistent or even intrinsicly likeable. In this sense, Agnes is an exploration in and of itself, which, though it may hold value in and of itself, doesn't need any attention. It would have done well as a mere study, but it isn't agreat book, granted that Stamm's style isn't surprising at all and bored me a great deal.
This book seems to be ideal for those who seek to torture a classroom for the sake of mere philosophical considerations, that lay the basis of this work, or for those who have nothing else to read. ( )
