"In the spring of 1993 Sarah Smith found herself at the centre of a living nightmare. Told she was on an IRA hit list, she was forced to go on the run to save her life and the lives of her loved ones." "Always in fear of a sniper's bullet, Sarah was constantly moved around the country from one 'safe house' to another, working in low paid jobs, never knowing who she could trust. To evade detection she adopted numerous aliases, changed her looks, and deposited her earnings in a special police account, to be accessed when the nightmare was over." "One man was there to protect her: a British secret agent codenamed Robert Freegard. To survive assassination Sarah had to follow his rules with complete compliance: sever ties with family and friends, speak to no one, and wait for his orders." "Sarah Smith spent ten years on the edge of existence, sometimes starving and living rough, often penniless, and alone. But what she did not know was that she had been duped and was the victim of a ruthless criminal who would stop at nothing to get what he wanted." "Written with the pace of a thriller, Deceived is the true account of calculated cruelty. Stranger than fiction, it is the tale of a criminal mastermind and a victim who bravely confronted her captor and pieced a stolen life back together."--BOOK JACKET.… (mais)

What a weird story. I read a Dutch translation of this book and am too lazy to add it on goodreads. maybe another day. (done)

Anyways, lend this from the library and did not know what it was about so when I started reading it and realized what was happening, I am sorry but it was so unbelievable to me. Not that she is lying but how can you be so dumb? I don't understand. And her parents and others giving all that money. How stupid.Normally I can see 2 sides but in this case it is hard.
So I did not enjoy this book at all. Maybe it was because of the way it was translated or because from the start I just could not feel any affinity with anyone.

Nu in Het Nederlands.

The true story of a female student who, along with some other friends, was led to believe she was in danger of the IRA by a man she met in a bar. She spent ten years of her life under the spell of this conman. Interesting, rather scary view on how people can be brainwashed. ( )

Well it doesn't happen very often, but I couldn't finish this! I listened to the audiobook and hated the narration. I couldn't even get past chapter one and as a Lancastrian feel quite insulted by the accent that the narrator gave John. Unforunately, one of the only other books that I've been unable to complete on LibraryThing was also recounting a true story. Unfortunately having a fascinating or extraordinary life does not automatically mean that you should be the person writing about it. The story sounds incredibly interesting - a woman deceived into going on the run for 10 years believing her boyfriend is an undercover policeman investigating the IRA - but why oh why not get an acomplished ghost writer or biographer to do the written work. Very disappointing. ( )
