In December 1975, the Lutz family moved into their new home on suburban Long Island. George and Kathleen Lutz knew that, one year earlier, Ronald DeFeo had murdered his parents, brothers, and sisters in the house, but the property--complete with boathouse and swimming pool--and the price were too good to pass up. Twenty-eight days later, the entire Lutz family fled in terror.… (mais)

I love the 1979 film THE AMITYVILLE HORROR, but until now had never read the Jay Anson book on which the film was based. The book is creepy and, interestingly, timeless. The 1970s were full of paranormal research and television programs and movies about paranormal subjects were common. However, there is almost nothing in the text of this book that would significantly date its contents to having occurred nearly 45 years ago.

Regardless of whether you believe the events the book describes (I'm a skeptic), the tale is well-told and convincing. The writing is clear and concise. The descriptions are wonderfully haunting. I was surprised to find that the role of the priest in the text is much more significant than I remember it being in the 1979 film (though I haven't seen the film in a long time). While reading this book, I was very much reminded of Stanley Kubrick's take on Stephen King's THE SHINING, and it made me wonder how different the film would have been if Kubrick had been at the helm.

If you're a fan of modern paranormal investigation shows, allegedly true ghost stories, or even stories about hauntings in general, THE AMITYVILLE HORROR remains at the top of the list of must-reads. ( )

112 Ocean Avenue .
Ludicrously published as a "True Story " , this book chronicles what supposedly happened to the Lutz family (and a priest who attempted to bless the house) after moving into this property in Amityville NY, a little over a year after a mass murder occurred there [that part is true, the Defeo case ]. It's also true the Lutz family only stayed at the house for 28 days. Most everything else though....really?? Well over 25 separate paranormal events are mentioned: an embracing ghost, oozing green slime, levitating Lutzes, a biting porcelain lion, and a pig with glowing red eyes, just to name a few. The book itself is mildly entertaining, but with a peculiar lack of atmosphere considering the subject matter. I did enjoy the alternating viewpoints of the Lutzes and the priest. The book includes a slightly pretentious preface and an epilogue. The overall reading experience was just "O.K."

I read this when it was first released; I was young, had no mortgage, no job, no children, no home, no responsibilities; so back then I had no "real world" fears to interfere with fears manufactured by the fiction I was reading. It scared me then, it does not scare me now.....well maybe the desperate financial situation of the Lutz family would terrorize me now as it didn't back then......

I can't say that the quality of the writing was stellar, it wasn't, or that the story was a compelling edge-of-your-seat thrill ride because it wasn't.

This is a mediocre at best haunted house story. It was presented as a true story at the time of its release; this has since been debunked; as a work of fiction it is sadly lacking. ( )

I was about 13 years old when I read this. I really liked this book. I really believed this book. I was excited about this book. Well, I WAS excited until some fairly conservative Christian friends told me it was Satanic and I ought not be reading it. Now that was a downer. But at the time - I liked it. ( )

In the long ago days I used to ride my bike past this house in Amityville. It's a house. Just like all the other houses around it in suburban NY. Such a silly book that made so much money. ( )
