One of the best murder mystery I've read in some time. The plot revolves around all these fictional characters yet each of them are inspired by real life persons and incidents from India - from the high profile murder of the bartender to the utterly corrupt politician and his criminal son, from the story of a cheated American to the life of a Bollywood actress, from the story of a slum dweller who dreams of richness and love to the story of a simple tribal from Andaman - the story is written beautifully - and keeps readers in the suspense until the last page. Swarup kuvaa Intian arkea ja yhteiskuntaa vaivihkaa mutta siten, että ne avautuvat ulkomaalaiselle lukijalle. Syyllisten seurueessa tutustutaan hyvin erilaisiin hahmoihin, joita Intia yhdistää. Tyylikeinona on, että kunkin päähenkilön tarinaan keskitytään omissa luvuissa, ja tekstin tyyli vaihtelee henkilöittäin.
Swarupin hahmonkehittely on aika epätasaista laatua, sillä toiset ovat hyvinkin kiinnostavia, toiset vähän tylsiä. Kirjan loppuun päästessä tuntuu siltä kuin hahmoihin olisi saanut pureutua syvemmällekin; ehkä näin runsaslukuinen päähenkilökaarti olisi edellyttänyt suhteellisen pitkää romaania. It was a good thriller. You have to know a little about Indian culture and history to get some of the cultural references and character sketches. The end was very unpredictable, and kind of hypocritical (of the narrator). I don't regret reading it. ( )
