Een bedenking vooraf : Een boek over Web 2.0 in bibliotheken ? Is dat niet zeer web 1.0 ? Een boek te schrijven over zo iets vluchtigs en veranderlijk als web 2.0 en toch nog actueel blijven is pas een uitdaging. En in die uitdaging zijn de auteurs en redacteurs slechts gedeeltelijk gelukt.

In de afgelopen vijf jaar heeft het begrip Web 2.0 (oorspronkelijk bedacht in 1999) het hele maatschappelijke bestel doordrongen. Web 2.0 is een omstreden, allesomvattende term, gebruikt als afkorting voor iets van RSS, social networking, blogs, wiki's, samenwerking en open source software, video en beeld delen, web services en folksonomies, tot tal van andere tools en applicaties .

Web 2.0 gaat niet alleen over technologie, natuurlijk, en dat is de reden waarom dit werk het effect ervan op mensen verkent, vooral de sociale aspecten van samen werken en leren. Terwijl het 23-dingen-geweld zich met succes op het ervaren van interactieve webtoepassingen richt, zijn Parkes en Walton vooral begaan met een stand van zaken te geven en de mogelijkheden te beschrijven hoe deze instrumenten kunnen ingezet worden in een institutionele context. Vooral een boek voor experten en leidinggevenden dus.
